M390 have excellent edge retention but low toughness , AEB-L have low edge retention but is very tough . So why not combine them in san mai ? M390 for core of course and AEB-l on sides ? HT is enough close for both as far as i remember ....And if they react differently to etch would be cool ?

**************** has tried about every combo that makes sense. He's been making SS welded steel a long time. We'll find out the answer to your question from one of the true masters. :)

Well, since that's the case, I removed my @ so as not to bother the man. :)

My question about your combo is, how stainless is AEBL? How about 410 as the clad, or 416?

AEB L have good corrosion resistance . AEB L would harden so no easy to scratch ,410 , 416 would be easy to scratch ?

While 410 and 416 harden, it's certainly not in the range of AEB-L.
Temp matching plays into this and at least AEB-L is closer to the temps of M390, though still not real close. It'd be interesting to see the HT scheme and final hardnesses.
