First off, sorry but I did not get any pics. My 13 year old son and I went up to see some friends for Trees and Quiet today. Billy got to warm up his new Machax for the first time! I gave him some instruction on safety and technique and he was very receptive of the instruction. We had one missed swing that scared him a bit but because he had used proper foot placement, we had nothing more than a little bit of embarrassment :) He is still got a lot to learn about technique but he is on his way towards being a chopper! The Machax is perfectly sized for him being easy to control but having all that mechanical advantage to its design. I think next time out we are gonna plan some sort of project like a shelter or something so he can do more than just break down some light brush :)

Sounds like a good day. The Machax is one of my favorites to use and abuse.

Thread is worthless without pics though.

Mini-Bill is a good kid...missed the little guy at the last gathering. My kids think the machax is the coolest thing in the world, still a ways from letting the chop though.

That is awesome. Definitely wouldn't say worthless thread without pics. Getting kids out there is always worth it!

Good on ya for gettin out there with the kiddos! I am enjoying my kids being still babies in my eyes, but I am excited for the day they will be able to go out to learn and contribute. We shall see.

I have had people in the past be surprised that my kid is not a little Rambo Jr being as how his Dad is a knifemaker but it's always been because I am a knifemaker that I held off letting him play with the big blades. I know just how dangerous the big blades can be. Billy is finally at that stage where his body has caught up to the desire for more adult sized tools. It's a lot of fun for me to see him growing up :D

I know what you mean...my wife was just giving me a hard time because according to her my best friend is my 14 year old nephew. That is just a great age...between a child and a well...larger child. Fishing, camping, hunting, shooting, that's just the age when mon seems to let go a little and we can really take over.

Cool, I would have liked someone to teach me how to use a knife before I cut myself so many times. Instead I am the 13 year old teaching the adults (literally) I even made a quiz after my uncle handed my new bk9 back to me full of chips :D
