So Far
Today I headed out to the trapline.I wanted to get rid of some extra bait I had leftover from trapping.Wanted to set the trail cameras to take pictures of any animals coming to feed on that bait
Where I trap it was partially logged at the turn of the last century The logging parctice then was to cut above the bottom swelling of the tree.Cutting above this was less work. They cut many feet above the ground standing on spring boards What it left was a huge stump.
Heres a picture of one from the summer

I have used a hollow stump that they cut years ago. What I do is fill the hollow with bait, cover the top with a dunnage pallet.I have a hole cut near the bottom. The animals have to work the hole to eat.The bait is protected from ravens and othe birds.Birds will eat a surprisingly amount in a short time.
To access this area I had to shovel across one small snow slide

Heres a couple pictures of the stump with the snow we have had this winter. Note-Not the same one from the summer picture

I do this through out the season and never trap near this location. Here is a picture of a snow den made by a wolverine while it hung around eating my last deposit of food. When food is plentiful they will stay near that location. It was cool to see.You could tell it has stayed around for quite some time. But not lately.

It will be back, along with many other animals.Lets hope
I set 2 trail cameras up to cover some angles of approach.
Going to be away for a couple weeks. That should be ample time to get some photos.
If you look near the red branches you can see one camera

Sorry folks not any nice mountain scenes today I played around all day in the rain

Picture of the ever silent foreman, who is along to make sure I get it right was blurry so I will have to subsitute a picture from another rainy day this winter
She ran 12 km today

So in 2 weeks time given a few days I will spark up this thread again with any pictures I get.
Lets hope so
Thanks Dan'l

Nice thread. I love how you outlined your process of baiting. Would love to see some of the critters you catch on film. Just don't have Rick around your site as he has a habit of whipping sticks at game cameras for some reason.

Great pics, man. That sure is a good lookin' dog. Looks to be a good friend to have in the woods.

dboles, your "backyard" sure beats the heck out of my "backyard".
Anytime you can get up into an area like that, it has to be a good day . . . .
Thanks for taking us with you.
Be safe.

Your neck of the woods looks seriously sweet! Gotta keep your eyes peeled around those old growth stumps, sometimes the loggers left stuff behind. I've heard stories of spring boards and crosscut saws being found here on Van Isl. The loggers also cut about the swell like that to avoid the increased amounts of pitch that is found in old growth stems.

Fetch the cameras
Today was the day! Had a few trapping related chores to get out of the way in the AM
Loaded the pack, dog pack, Libby, snowshoes and I was off
At the road end I loaded up the dogs pack with more meat and scraps for the camera site
Heres the loaded dog.She had around 20 lbs to carry

Lots of snow has melted since I set the cameras.Still lots more to go
Going to have trouble with the access road this spring

Couple of scenery

Overcast today around 9 c degrees

After walking 5 km as I neared the cameras I was elated to see quite a few different animal tracks,Heres a wolf next to it is a 6 inch water bottle. The track looks to have 5 toes It doesnt thats just the remnent of anothe track underneath
beaver2011014.jpg

Animals had been hitting the bait stump hard
beaver2011015.jpg

They had moved the lid off the stump and ate most of everything I had left
Blade for today -a Tlim bushcrafter.Nice knife he builds but never responded to my emails about a cracked scale.

The lunch spot.Libby traded bait for trail cameras. That was her load out
beaver2011018.jpg

Waiting for her share.Packing is fun but hungry work

I am dying to see whats on these camera's...great thread Bro!!!

Well folks the trail cameras didnt pan out so well. One camera didnt take any pictures at all.The other took 61 pictures of which 50 some odd were black squares. There are 5 pictures taken in quick order of one pine marten working the set.
This is a real disappointment to me as when I retrieved the cameras there was plenty of animal activity evident
Something large had moved that pallet that I use as a lid As much as I would like to blame the cameras I think the problem lies with the owner operator, who sometimes can be a bonehead.
So today I have reread both manuals, put in fresh batteries ,reset the default options Soon as I finish this post I will head out on snowshoes and try again
So without further ado heres the best picture of a pine marten

On the way out I flollowed some old moose tracks. My wanderings took me past 4 of his days. Its interesting to see how they get along.
I also had come across a spot where some type of raptor-owl or hawk had killed and plucked a Varied Thrush
Heres a feather melted into the snow.

So Im thining a week or so to leave the cameras this time.

I find your threads some of the most fascinating. You live in beautiful country and trapping is something I've really only read about. It's great to see pictures from someone out there doing it.

THis is one of my favorite threads to..I have had bad luck with trail camera's to...but sometimes, you get some really cool shots.
Yours are going to have MUCH better shots..even the bad ones..great selection of animals up your way.
