fun with an RTAK

So I was thinking about the testing protocols thread earlier this afternoon and decided to have a little fun. This isn't a real test of any sorts, none of the variables can be measured... it was just good, old fashioned fun destroying stuff with a big knife.

Well, since spring is almost here, it's time to dust off the camping stuff and get the outdoor knives sharpened up and ready to go. So I pulled my RTAK out of it's box and unsheathed it. Still razor sharp like I left it.

You all know the specs, nothing special. 10 inch, 1095 blade, 17 inches overall, black micarta handle slabs.

So I found a half inch thick sappling. Cut it like it was butter. So that test really doesn't mean much. I hacked through a 5 or so inch tree as well. No problem.

Then came my favorite test. The television test. In a field near where I live I came across this old Philco, wooden case television. "Interesting," I thought. "What ever shall I do? Ahh... I have a big knife." So I destroyed the television. Granted it was fairly rotted through in places, but still pretty solid. The RTAK sank into it so deep I had trouble getting it out. That television is in multiple parts now. And, the blade has a scratch that few others can claim... a scar from a battle with a television.

Then it started to rain... so I decided to head back in. After hackign through numerous trees and a TV, the knife woudln't shave anymore. But a few minutes bringing the edge back and now it does.

It's ready for this summer. ANd hopefully it'll get to see more action than last summer (lots of rain and hurricanes last year, didn't get to go out much).

I doubt you took on the glass from the front...that stuff is like 1" thick!

Also, not a good idea to do that, dumps all sorts of mercury and junk into the soil.

Course, I only found this out after taking a couple TVs out to the sandpit and taking them apart with a shotgun :p

No. If there was any glass left in this TV I coudln't find it. Looks like it had been taken out before it was dumped.
