Fun with dremel and files

The guard on my newest sword is very substantial, but just a little plain. I took a Dremel tool with a 3/16" carbide round burr, and textured the back of the guard. Then filed a groove around the edge with a round file, blued the groove, and polished the rest of the edge. The face of the guard toward the blade is blued. Just a nice Saturday project before I take the grandkids to the county fair. Thanks for looking.

Very nice work, great idea. Blends in well with the original piece, without being distracting.

Perfect! I have that exact dremel bit in my drawer so see how it can be done. The only hard part is that work with the round file must have taken quite a while. Was it difficult getting the cold blue into those precise areas?

This is a great idea as I have several swords that are fine on the front of the guard, but the back is usually pretty rough and of course laha gets up on that area as well, etc.

Nice touch, and thanks for another great idea (that I will shamelessly try to copy!) :D

Regards,

Norm

Thanks Norm and olpappy,
I just blued the whole edge with a q-tip, then polished it off the flats. :) The filing didn't take more than 45 minutes or so.

Nice job. I'd be tempted to blue the textured part, and steel wool it off the high parts. Sort of antiquing it a little. :D

Neat idea and filed for future reference.

Sort of like 3-D jewelling.

What kind of sword is it?

I've never really been interested in swords, but I have three now and I'm really liking my Nepoleon sword...

Indeed, Ad. Cold blue works on metals other than steel. It colors brass nicely too. Also brings out engraving in a natural looking way. It can be diluted to give more subtle effects if desired.

Nice work, Steve. Unusual, attractive, and it fits right in like it was meant to be there all along.

Shappa, here's a pic from the blade side.

Bri, that's a good idea. I might try it. May just tie everything together visually.

Sassas, It was one of Yandu's specials. One of a kind so far, although I hope Sher makes some more of them. Overall pictures in this THREAD .

Thanks for all the comments guys.

Bri in Chi, you were right. Much less ......Bling-Bling? Bluing the stippled side was a fantastic idea. Thanks!
