Y'all are going to think me a little weird, or a lot weird, but I noticed my wife cutting select-a-size paper towels in half. After this continued for a few days I asked... She simply said she didn't need a whole piece. She was making about a 5" by 6" piece.

So here I go The first roll I cut in half was with a 104 Compadre in 5160 steel. It did ok but with jagged cut kind of like a chain saw on a log. note that the 104 is too short to go all the way through the roll.

So next was a 119 in S30V. It was easier slicing through a roll, but I got a bit crooked and the halfs were a tad crooked.
Too short as well so a bit jagged..

Then since there is a 108 FROE in 5160 laying here it was next. With the longer blade it was much easier cutting through the roll than the 104.
It made an easier cut but still a bit jagged.

Well,,, the 535 Moose showed up today with the S35VN steel. It sliced through a roll easier, faster, and a smoother cut than any of the others.

At some point maybe I'll try a longer 420 blade on a roll. But for now I gotta go find a place to store all these half rolls of paper towels.

Nothing scientific here. Just my weird out of the box curiosity. paper froe.jpg

Now I bet that would do a great job.... But I don't have a longer blade than on a 118 in D2. A minty so not taking one down to 7.5
LOL. I wouldn’t do that to a knife either. I work for an OEM that manufactures converting equipment for tissue and towel. That is what our log saw blades are.

Well I had to do it. I drug out a longer bladed 420HC Steel in the form of a 651 PigSticker.
Sad to say it got less than half way into a roll before I gave up on it.

So then I dug out a 650 Nighthawk and got slightly farther and gave up on it.

So back to the S35VN and finished that roll.

So for me, the premium steels worked better.

NOW!!!! EVERY knife I used is new in the box with the Buck factory edge. And I understand the differences in blade thickness will have made some difference as well.

Like I said, nothing scientific here. But was a fun exercise...

Now thinking of all the things these half rolls can be used for. Emergency paper in the Deer Stand was the first thing that came to mind.:cool:

During a 3 week period years ago I was trying to sharpen a 653 with the tanto point on stones..I had a incredible pile of cut up junk mail. I would keep sharpening until it got dull and start again. I finally gave up and my next trip to the Blade Show gave it to Joe for a trip to Post Falls to get the tip right. I called it my Ebay 'Trophy Buck' because it was just under $5 00 delivered with a ratty shieth.
