Hi all,
I've been on layoff for the past two weeks...woohoo...and spent some time removing the coatings from my BK16 and 14 and I've tried my hand at file work on the 14.
Here are some photos:
I did a false hamon patina on the 16. I did a tiger stripe patina on the 14 but sanded it off when doing the file work. I sanded with 220 grit wet/dry paper and finished with 1500 grit...it's what I had laying around.
I bought the file set at Home Depot for seven bucks...money well spent...but I'll tell you that filing heat treated 1095 is a pain in the arse. I watched a YouTube video on file work and the knife maker did his file work pre heat treating and the files cut through like butter.
Enjoy!

Here are the latest pics of tinkering around with my BK14. I did the patina with an hour long soak with white vinegar with some soy sauce added for the heck of it. The tiger stripe affect was done after the soak with horse radish.
I finished the file work last night and polished the top of the blade with my file to remove the grind marks, then 220 wet/dry sand paper and polished it up with 1500 wet/dry paper.
I think it came out pretty well. Going to make or buy some scales for it. Don't know what I want yet.
