Simple, yes. HIGHLY effective, yes. There were no D-rings this big at the hardware store, so i bought some steel rod & cut & bent my own. This thing ROCKS now. You can get into/out of vehicles & atv's & squat down with NO BINDING or sticking the handle into your side when it is strapped to your leg. Hardly even know your carrying it now.

Is the belt loop made from a duty belt keeper? I like this mod a lot. I think that I may be able to scrounge a large D ring from an old Blackhawk duffle that I don't use anymore. Good idea.

Yes. It's a duty belt keeper. My original prototypes were sewn on loops. I used some HD 1" nylon stap material. I bought a HD dog leash that was triple layer, & just cut the thread so it was one long piece. Sewed it with 15lb test fishing line. Not pretty, but very functional. You can also adjust the length by doing it that way. So if your knife is long or short, you can have it rest in the same spot on your leg, with NO BINDING during any activity.

I would stay away from a duffle bag D-ring. Many are made from white metal & break easily. That steel rod is NOT going to break---ever.

I have been contemplating similar mods. I like your excecution. That belt keeper is a great idea.

I considered doing this but also couldn't find a D-ring anywhere that would fit. Then it dawned on me that I was going for drop-thigh carry before I had really tried it out just on the belt. After my latest tinkering with it, the belt carry worked fine for me, but I would like to see how it carries dropped here one of these days.

TwinStick, I really like how you used the belt keeper there. Great job!

not a bad idea, but I still think the original belt loop is a weak link on the BK2 sheath

I agree that the belt loop is a weak link on the gen 2 sheath, far too big for a normal belt, and that leads to a distinct floppiness. Did you see the mods I did for mine to fix that problem? Took very little in the way of effort to achieve, and works really well. You might want to consider something similar to stiffen it up a bit. Heck, the extra storage for the fresnel lens alone makes it worthwhile in my opinion at least.
