Greetings & salutations fellow kuknuts!
I am fully aware that our favourite auntie (Yangdu) is way way way too busy to write any sort of book, full of mouth-watering pictures of H.I. stuff, but I wonder if a two thousand and ....whatever..(I know that these things take time!! ) calendar wouldn't be a starter,....I would buy a couple.....wouldn't you?
just-a-thought !

Yes, good idea. I would also buy. The fund raising part is a good idea too. I'm sure there are lots of places for some money to go towards, in Nepal.

I'd be interested as well. You know what might be cool is if the calendar included items designed by the forumites, along with their notes/comments on them, and/or pics of the more exotic/rare items. So if there were pics of the pen-knife khukri, the Cherokee Rose, the Yvsa Cherokee Special, the foxy folly, the Uncle Bill Especial, the JKM-1, the HI Katar, and the Rusty knife, along with the designers comments regarding what inspired them, that would be really awesome.

Items designed by the kamis would also be nice - so a Kumar Kobra, hopefully with Kumar's comments, would be great.

Also, it would probably also be a requirement to have a Kothimoda in there, just because they're beautiful.

Great idea, thank you Nigel

Maybe a couple of snags in such an idea as it stands....
Firstly, there would need to be a certain pre-determined print run to make it economical, and more to make the exercise a fund-raising success (ie. cost effective).
Secondly, and related, the appeal of kukris and knives - however well made and aesthetically pleasing - is bound to be rather limited where the general public are concerned.
It would need to be attractive to a wider potential market.....
Appeal could be greatly enhanced through the inclusion of "locality" pictures (as are very interesting on the HI website) -- since Nepal ranges from low altitude and forest to the mountains and snow, why not have images that span the lot. Not just the mountains, but the villages, rural landscapes and indeed the seasons.
A large format, with at least half of the image-area (as opposed to calendar area) per page devoted to scenery and the rest to notes, commentary and pictures of the various knives/kukris/swords and their makers....

Lots of good ideas coming through ,I particularly like the locality aspect, from the deserts of war torn Iraq to the peaceful mountains of south New Zealand to the big timber country of British Columbia to the jungles of Malasia to the ''Heelands 'o' Scortland" och aye the noo !Diversity is good.

Although Yangdu, as the forum owner, can sell HI related knives and items, users may not. If this is undertaken in any way, it would have to be an HI effort.

Spark is the owner of Bladeforums.com and has contractual agreements with the individual forum owners...they are binding and exclusive.

A great idea to pass along to Yangdu...but perhaps has already been said to accomplish that.

Just to clarify friend,,,I only ever intended the idea to be an H.I. effort ,just thought that there might be some forumites who might be willing to help "the cause".The cause being the further promulgation of H.I. products, publicity, growth and success as a business venture!!!Sorry if I spoke out of turn!

In response to some of the earlier posts:

Firstly, there would need to be a certain pre-determined print run to make it economical, and more to make the exercise a fund-raising success (ie. cost effective).

Actually, this can be done cheaply and easily online through CafePress.com. While several variants are available, as an example, you could create a full color, 17" x 11", 100 lb cover weight high gloss paper, wire bound calendar for 18.99. A similar product can be made, I believe even more cheaply, at Wal-Greens. The products are individually made, so there is no issue of "print runs". I know I've seen CafePress used to promote other websites and products, and there is some method for the trademark owner to be compensated directly from Cafepress. Boom. Problem solved.

Secondly, and related, the appeal of kukris and knives - however well made and aesthetically pleasing - is bound to be rather limited where the general public are concerned. It would need to be attractive to a wider potential market.....

It is likely that the only people to be aware of the calendar would be those haunting the BF or HI's website, so an appeal to a "broader market", while perhaps ideal, would not garner additional sales. However, the idea of the pictures of Nepal is a great one. The concept you describe sounds beautiful. The problem, of course, is getting high quality non-copyrighted photos of Nepal taken and digitized to make the calendar. Yangdu might be able to help with this. Nwallis idea sounds brilliant - forumites could submit pictures from around the world, anyone could select the photos they want, and make exactly the the calendar they want on CafePress.

Although Yangdu, as the forum owner, can sell HI related knives and items, users may not. If this is undertaken in any way, it would have to be an HI effort.

Nasty, I'm sure you are acting in your capacity as a moderator to prevent any misunderstandings. However, the comments made were intended to express interest in a new product or marketing device for HI, rather than promoting a non-HI sanctioned product (as Yangdu recognized). I believe these comments were completely compliant, both in letter and spirit, to the purpose and rules of these forums. While your diligence is admirable, please be aware that your zeal to prevent problems may also have the effect of stifling discourse and participation in the HI forum. I hope this suggestion is taken in the spirit it is intended, which is to promote constructive discussion, active participation, and promotion of HI products on the HI forums. Thanks.

Moderation always runs that risk...since I have defined the scope, I am satisfied that I have performed my duty. Had there been anything out of bounds, I'd have taken appropriate steps.

Chat away...
