Fungi are a part of the outdoors, just like animals, flora, or anything else. At this time of year, there are many hundreds of species of fungi at their best, around here.

Does anyone want to show pictures of fungi, and talk about fungi?

I'll start.

Queen Bolete – Boletus regineus
Queen boletes are big (up to a few pounds) and tasty!

Death Cap – Amanita phalloides
Amanita phalloides kills more people than any other kind of mushroom. Very nasty poison! It takes up to 2 or 3 days for the symptoms to start – so, by then, the mushrooms are already digested; and there's no antidote, no cure, no effective treatment (short of multiple organ transplants). In fact, by then, a lot people don't even connect the symptoms with the cause. Then the symptoms go away – and doctors sometimes release the patients, thinking "Whatever was wrong is better, now".

Then comes the nasty part, where it slowly kills you over about a 2 week period, by inhibiting RNA synthesis.

Reportedly, they also taste good!

Garlic Mushrooms – Marasmius copelandii
Garlic mushrooms are beautiful, very tiny mushrooms that grow in clusters on tanoak leaves. And they smell like garlic.

Oyster Mushrooms – Pleurotis ostreatus
Yummy!

Panther Cap – Amanita pantherina
Amanita pantherina is one of the most potently psychotropic species in the world – not recommended, though.

Amethyst Deceiver –Laccaria amethysteo-occidentalis
This one is kind of old and faded, but they're deep purple, when fresh!

Slimy Spike Cap – Gomphidius glutinosus
They're covered in mushroom snot!

Ramaria fennica
Ramaria fennica's reproductive structures look more like coral than like a traditional mushroom shape.

Brown Cup Fungus – Peziza arvernensis
Peziza arvernensis's reporductive structures look more like cups than like a traditional mushroom shape.

Let's see you fungus pictures, hear your stories, discuss your questions, etc.

I took these the other day:

Some of my favorite things to take pictures of are interesting mushrooms. I used to have a great shot of the largest cluster of Gymnopilus spectabilis I have ever seen. Dunno what I did with it though.

Wow! Lots of amazing shots!
Your photos are really magnificent, Evolute.

Not that great as yours, here's some my humble pics..
I love fungi, though I cannot identify none of them :D

I can't tell them for certain, from these pictures – I'd need more information, and I'm not familiar with the fungi in your area – but I can try to take some guesses that might help you get started with identifying them.

Possibly some kind of Lepiota?

Definitely some kind of puffball.

2007.07.09.R0011977.JPG

Some kind of stinkhorn.

2009.07.04.R0018800.JPG

Some kind of jelly fungus. It would be easier to tell more, if it was more mature.

Possibly some kind of mycena.

Thanks Evolute, for identifications.
I'd just loved the color and the shape of fungi so far.

I'll try some identification, which will help me to find more wild food :D

I have a few photos. Looking for Oyster shrooms I found this long stemmed fungus.

Nice shots.

Mick,

That's a perfect looking fly agaric/Amanita muscaria. I wish the ones I found looked so nice.

Dipbait, nice haul of morels!

I love fungi. Make for tasty tidbits to add to my soup..(and thus there was this small voice emanating from a tiny lil blonde toothpick hiding under her poncho).."Are you SURE thats not poison?"
