Trying to decide on a really slim one-hander. I've done a search on both, and did find some info, but it didn't help me choose. Specifically, how well can I expect the linerless micarta handle of the Falcon to hold up, plus the lock? How is AMK's AUS8? I read that the BM 440C is good, so that's not a prob. But I'd like a little more info on this version of the axis. I read it wasn't as smooth, but has anyone tried to polish up the components, and does there seem to be any difference in the springs? Edge geometry? The 530 is ground like a dagger, but it also appears to be a good bit wider than the Falcon, so I wonder if the grinds are still similar. The AMK is .08", and the BM is .09", is there much difference in actual cutting performance? Being wider, I'm sure the 530 would have caveats in fine cutting tasks, but I wonder if the whole knife might be a little tougher.

Hell, I'll probably end up with both :footinmou

I can easily recomend the Al Mar Falcon! Mine is the regular blade (no bevel on top of the blade) and not serrated. I have a small collection of folders that are all in the $120 or less class and the Falcon is EASILY the winner in fit and finish. When the knife is open, it is very hard to see the joint between the lock and the blade on the spine of the knife. Also, I like Al Mar's AUS 8 and it came very, very sharp new in the box.

Also, the lock is very tight and the handle seems sturdy and stiff, even though there aren't any liners (like you said) and the knife is so light.

I can never figure out why there's so little talk here about the Al Mar Ultralights when they're such fine knives! I don't see how you could go wrong in getting one.

I concur. I picked up a used Eagle Talon Ultralight a couple weeks ago, and it's now my summer EDC. I've always like long, slim blades anyhow; this one weighs next to nothing, but still feels plenty sturdy despite it's weight. (Or lack thereof!)

I also have a Benchmade 530. Weighs even less than the Al Mar, but doesn't feel as solid. Also, here in the People's Republic of New Jersey, I'm not comfortable EDCing a folder that looks that much like a double-edge dagger. Hell, I get frightened sheeple looks when I use a Swiss Army Knife!

A long slim blade? How about my favorite folder, the Cold Steel Ti-Lite with zytel handles? It's real good for the price and stands up well for everyday use. But probably only 90% as good as a pricier Benchmade, and definitely not sheeple friendly.

Yeah, I'm in CA right now, the look of the 530 has me a little worried about getting strange looks.

I,d vote for the 530 , it's a lot stronger than it looks , and has the Axis lock . The 530 is one of the sweetest IWB carries ever .

I just wish the Benchmade, instead of doing a new design for the 530, had just worked an Axis Lock into the older 350. Not quite as lightweight as the 530, but better ergonomics, and a more solid feel!

I ordered the Al Mar... first. Now just to see how long til I get the BM. *sigh* I'd get help, but I'd have to stop buying knives to pay the therapist :D

I carried 1 of the Al Mar Falcons for the last 2 years as my work knife. I work as a nurse so I needed a light weight knife that would not drag my scrubs pockets down. Most of my EDC knives were too heavy. The only reason I retired the Al Mar Falcon is because it was the knife I had on when my 2nd son was born so I want to save it for him.

Currently using a Kabar Dozier knife but not sure I like it. Had wanted to get something different but I may just get another Al Mar Falcon.
