Ken's sticky about the recent trolls got me thinking about something that's been in the back of my mind for a while.

How common is funnel cake outside of New Jersey? I always figured it was common everywhere, but I've met a few out-of-staters who'd never heard of it. Do any of you guys live in funnel-cake deprived areas? Should we start a telethon? :D

I'm rather interested to know why it's called funnel cake.

Does it look like a funnel?
Is it made in a funnel?
Do you need a funnel to eat it?

Enquiring minds need to know.

It's called a funnel cake because a funnel is used to pour a batter in a free form shape into hot oil for frying and yes it is a recent addition (10 years ago) to the fairs here in Southern California. I have also been told that they have it at Knotts Berry Farm (an amusment park near Disneyland).

Is that the stuff that looks like poo? :p

I haven't seen it in person, nor tasted it. It actually sounds good though!

funnel what? * scratches head *

what is New Jersey?

In this area, (and the Midwest in general) no outdoor event is complete without a funnel cake!

New Jersey is a state most noted for its excellent diners, draconian gun laws, and Knife-Collectors' Association that has more high-quality blades than all its knife shops put together :D

we call them elephant ears in NC...

I bought a home funnel cake maker thingy from wally world last Christmas for my squeeze. You know one of those last minute visits scrounging for gifts.... HEY, this looks cool - she LOVES funnel cakes. She still hasn't tried it. Hey, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Pennsylvania is funnel cake central. It's the most satisfying desert on earth.

Amish Funnel Cakes
3 eggs, beaten
2 cups milk
1/4 cup granulated sugar
4 cups flour, sifted
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

To beaten eggs, add milk and sugar. In separate bowl sift dry ingredients. Add to egg mixture, beating until smooth.

Heat oil to 375 degrees F and pour batter into hot fat through a regular household funnel. Control the flow of batter by holding your finger over the bottom of the funnel. Make patterns, designs, swirls or whatever with the stream of batter as it flows into the hot fat. When "cakes" are golden brown, drain, sprinkle with confectioners' sugar and serve warm.

Personally, I've never tried Funnel cake. However, I did try a deep fried twinkie at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Anyone else try those?
