Tonight at dinner my four year old daughter was taking her butter knife and rubbing the edges of it along the sides of a pretzel rod. At first I didn't think anything about it, but she kept doing it over and over and over. After a few minutes and seeing the determination on her face I asked, "What are you doing with your knife?" Her response - "I'm sharpening it." After she finished she handed it to me and asked, "Do you think it's sharp enough?"

I suppose they really do watch everything we do...and yes, we are starting her early.

Have a great night.

That's funny. My four-year-old girl asked me the other day what my sharpening stone is. I told her and she decided she'd call it my sharpening whale. She's full of whimsy.

She's a chef. That is a priceless story. Good stuff

CLASSIC. and yes ... they are watching and listening although some times it may seem the opposite.

Does your daughter work for Queen?:D

Good stuff. My six year old daughter is always begging me to get her a knife when we go to flea markets and antique shops. She has already made me promise to leave her my Wostenholm if I die. She lost her great grandma and received something to remember her by. For a six year old she gets it. The porcelain doll sits on her dresser beside a framed picture of the two of them to remind her. Thanks for sharing.

It's neat that she already "gets" it. Too many people of all ages don't.

I love this story!

However, the suspense is starting to wear on me.

Was it sharp enough?

:D

Good, good stuff.

Good story, appreciate the share. Treasure those small moments.

Great story. Reminds me of mine when they were little. You're certainly raising her right.

BTW, my youngest Daughter sharpens her Husband's knife 'cause he can't get a good edge on it... :D

Haha. Good story. My quality engineer (2 1/2 year old little boy) sees me drawing our surrounded by pieces and parts and always says, "whatcha got dad, knife parts?" Then proceeds to try to fit springs to blades and plays with my calipers. They really do watch everything we do.

Cute story - and like Duane, this made me smile thinking about it .

I reminds me of when my granddaughter, Emily, came to dinner one night with a nail-clipper "clipped" to her pocket so that the handle was showing on the outside of her pants.

She stood in front of me and said "I have a knife like you, Pop Pop!" - She was about 5 at the time and I will never forget that day.

John Keidaisch (JK Handmade Knives) saw me post that story and sent me a Spyderco Tenacious that he had ground blunt for his daughter. Emily still has that knife today!

Thanks for posting your story - that is a great moment and it does prove that you are her role model, and it makes me happy to know you are teaching her some good stuff!
