Today I rode my motorcycle up to the base of Mt. Tremont in New Hampshire's White Mountain region. Parked at the side of the road and hiked up.
I didn't expect to see anyone because there were no cars by the trailhead and the other approach to the summit is rarely used because you have to ford a river at the beginning. But just as I reached the summit and was about to begin naked sunbathing - (just kidding, it was chilly) - I heard a young guy yelling celebratory curse words back at his buddy to announce their near arrival at the summit. I don't think he expected to see anyone either.
As I welcomed them I spotted a large fixed blade on one guy's belt and noticed a familiar handle protruding from the sheath. It was a BM-E handle! I'm not even a Busse owner but I knew that handle shape and the riveted micarta slabs. I actually bought that knife when it was released but quickly sold it because I found the handle uncomfortable.
I asked the guy if that was a Busse and he was confused. I asked if I could see it and so he took it out and handed it to me.
I said "yeah, it's a Busse."
He replied that he bought it from a guy for $50 and figured he overpayed.
I told him it was worth at least $300 and he seemed pleased about that. Said he would take it to Iraq when he deployed and maybe sell it later.
I asked him why anyone would sell it to him for so little and he said, "the guy was sketchy, he probably stole it."
There were no markings on the blade. Could it have been a fake or did that guy get the deal of the century on a Busse?

Probably deal of a century. Some one out there is probably missing their e handle steel heart.

With sheath, it is probably worth more like 400-500.

That was very un hog like of you. You should have offered him $100 for it.

Interesting. I don't know if there were sterile BM-Es, but Busses have not been counterfeited that often. IMHO, he got a deal.

Cool to run across a Busse owner, even if he had no clue about what he had! ;)

Now I'm not saying it ain't a fake... But I have a BM-e smooth coat that has no markings/logo, so it may very well been real. Sounds like it's a bit hot, however, if he got it for 50 bucks...

Anyone in N.H. missing a BM-e?

If it's in the hands of a soon to be deployed serviceman I guess it's in good hands now.

Cool story... I guess you never know... I bought a stag handled CS trail master in the early '90's for $30 bucks (sketchy... yup).

The knife ignorance on his part is inexcusable, however, I guess most folks are just misguided and don't spend enough time on bladefourms... phhhhh... :p What has become of our educational system when a young lad doesn't even know which blade he carries... :)

Glad he has a busse if he is deploying, far too may infi blades sit in safes or drawers and never get pushed to discover their potential. Hopefully that fella will put it to good use!

The thought definitely crossed my mind! I just didn't feel right about it. I had about a little over $100 on me and a Spyderco Cat so I probably could have worked a deal. Actually I also had my new ESEE Junglas in my pack!

Jaxx - smooth coat??? I thought that was long gone before the E-series came out.

I do know that very very few (if any, for that matter) E-series I've seen with logos on them. Seen logos on ZT's. But regular E-series? I'm trying to picture one WITH a logo at this point. LOL I can't.

Sounds like someone implemented the five finger discount.... but since it's now in the hands of a soon to be deployed serviceman... It may have been destiny and part of the big plan for the greater good ;-)

Sounds like a deal, at least for the purchaser.

All of my Es are sterile, sept AB #86

Apparently, they aren't common, but they do exist. I believe jimmyjones has one also...I'm sure there's a few others scattered about. :)

If its stolen goods (which Im sure it is) I wouldnt call it a deal. Buying crap from thieves just hurts yourself and other people sadly:(

I have a sterile BM-E with smooth coating and the red looking tan micarta. Let's hope it wasn't stolen, maybe someone just didn't know what they had.
