Funtionality of the lanyard

I'll start with the fact that I've never held any model of any size of CRK knives. However, I'd like one of each. :D

What I have not been able to determine, and have not been able to find any commentary on, is the functionality of the lanyard. What's it there for? I think it looks great, but surely it has a practical purpose as well. Does it unwrap to be large enough for a wrist thong? Does it aid in removing from a pocket or sheath? Please enlighten me. Thanks!

Lanyards do both. They add to the look of the knife and also help when pulling the knife out when it is clipped to the pocket.

Certainly on fixed blades if the lanyard is long enough it can be used to help as a wrap to help secure the knife to hand. Most of the knife lanyards on the market are for looks. I could possible using a lanyard to fish a pocket knife out of your pocket if it did not have a clip on it. Really that might be stretching the usage of one.

I find it more for looks, then aiding it out of the pocket [although the clip is perfect], and lastly [possibly] for the small Sebenzas can add a bit more to the hand when producing more reach.

This. Also if you wanted to you could unwrapp the lanyard and tie a loop to keep it more secured on your hand.

I wear 5.11 Taclite pants at work and they have a small side pocket with top flap that a large sebenza fits in perfectly, just drop the knife in and when the pocket flap is down just the end of the lanyard with poke out the side, so every time I go for my sebenza I grab the lanyard end and pull the knife out. That pocket is the perfect protection for the knife, the knife is secure and you do not have to use the clip.

If you are wearing gloves the Sebenza can be tricky to get out of the pocket when clipped in, but with the lanyard on it is quite easy to get out.

I like a short fob on my folders/smaller fixed blades. I find it makes it easier to draw the knife and allows room to insert a pinky finger if extra retention is necessary.

am a little amazed how many people use a lanyard to aid in pulling the knife from the pocket. I guess with a small knife that is not beiing used as a possible defense weapon then, yeah sure that would work. My question is would the same people using the lanyard for this reason also attempt to use a lanyard for knife defense deployment? I have spent a little bit of time practicing with my knife to be able to deploy it fast and with good grip control. Just wondering how everyone else viewed this.

It makes drawing the knife MUCH easier when sitting. Especially in the car, with belt fastened. Very tricky without lanyard and very easy with. And you never know when you may need a knife (fast).

I don't carry a knife for defensive purposes but, for those who do, I can definitely see the possibility of a lanyard or fob interfering with drawing/deploying the knife.

I think the lanyard is very functional. I dont really see it as aiding in pulling from the pocket so much as aiding in the security of your grip on it as you pull from the pocket. The clip has the perfect amount of tension on it so the knife is not difficult to pull out of a pocket, but the lanyard certainly helps with the security of your grip.

Lanyard definitely helps for more secure draw from pocket. I recently removed the lanyard from a Large Classic (lanyard got ratty from use), and I immediately missed it. Time for a new one.

I use a lanyard on mine most of the time. Like most of the posters here I think it is handy to help get it moving out of the pocket. I don't have any of the fancy ones you see posted so often, although I do like the looks of many of them.

I keep a number of different lengths of cord handy on my dresser and chose one that will serve the days purpose. If I am wearing jeans I generally just tie one that matches the one it came with. It is handy and quick to tie. If I am wearing overalls and am going to carry it in the bib I usually just tie a loop. It serves two purposes. You can hook it on your pinky finger when using the knife and you can go around one of the snaps that holds the pocket closed making it very well secured.

I don't know that it slows down how fast I can get my knife out. It might but if I felt threatened I think I would go ahead and just remove my Hi-Power (which has no lanyard) from its holster.

I use a lanyard of my own design that can be used around the wrist, as a thumb thong or just a tactical pull

I just redesigned it so the bottom is two separate strands w/ stoppers rather than a closed loop. this allows the adjuster bead to be slid up to the brade resulting in no loop to snag while hiking (no pic of the new one yet)

EDIT: JUST REALIZED THIS THREAD WAS SPECIFIC TO THE MANUFACTURE'S LANYARD; PLEASE REMOVE IF NOT APPROPRIATE HERE SORRY

Thanks for all the input. I am familiar with the large wrist thong lanyards on many fixed blades, and was more interested in the small lanyard found on CRK folders. Like most things, sounds like it comes down to personal preference. Now I just need to pick up a couple and try them out!

I use my seb lanyard on my zaan,
I like the added color, the look and it certainly aids in pulling it out.
