Furbishing wheel?

edited to add it was a BURNISHING wheel...not Furbishing...thousands of rounds fired while looking cool and macho with no hearing protection is taking it's toll...

The other day I was in my dads shop and saw him turn on his stationary grinder and polish up his Gerber LST, quickly took his blade from dull grey to mirror polish, and he was shocked to find, sharpened the hell out of it, accidentally.

Intrigued I went and took a closer look at the wheel he used...It was soft foam with an abrasive compound imbedded in it. Took his standard beat up Gerber up to morror polished convex edge in a heartbeat.

It also worked VERY efficiently with one of my fixed blades, even a little more foolproof than a belt sander...

Immediately I started jumping up and down demanding to know where he got it. He got his from a friend of a friend of a friend that had a welding shop, and says he's searched all over the internet, Minnesota, etc. and can't find anymore of them.

Any of y'all know what I'm talking about or where to get 'em?

I think I need about a dozen of them :D

I checked the abrasives sections in a couple of industrial supply catalogs. The closest thing I could find were 3M Scotch-brite and Norton Bear-tex cut & polish wheels. The Norton wheel consists of a cloth mesh with abrasives in it.

These would probably give a really fine satin finish, maybe 800+ grit equivalent, so they might not be what your dad used. How good a mirror finish did he get with the wheels?

I think everyone would like to get a couple of those if you can find out what they are.

It gave a decent mirror finish, but not perfect. As far as my own experiments and the edge, it got 'em semi-hair popping sharp, it was no problem for me to bring 'em up the rest of the way with a good stropping.

no markings whatsoever on the wheel either...

I might post this over at General too, catch a few more eyes to see if we can track down this elusive critter...

I would check with some of the knife makers on BF, as I'll bet they would know. Anyone have one of the Tormek grinders? I think of them as mostly for chisels and related wood working tools, but I'm sure they would work.

O.K. there's the wheel but what do we mount it on?
8500 rpm max

so fit to 6" or 8" bench grinder
or anything you can fit it onto--
handheld grinder too.

Others than me will know the proper terms,
but.......

The hub-less version would need some sort of
plate-style mounting that grabbed hold.
Sort of see that here (smaller black disk on top of grinding wheel):

The key phrase is "depressed center"

the threaded hub will fit benchgrinder arbor,
maybe needing size increase adaptor
for 5/8" --> 7/8" dia.

[7" x 7/8" -- P/N 58-763]
[7" x 5/8" -- P/N 58-764]

Since the one I have measures ~7/16" thickness,
& has an arbor diameter of 5/8"
the P/N above must be for the provided threaded-hub size.

a starting point:
