is anything usable from an old home furnace? I'm getting a new one installed within the next month and I was wondering if I could salvage any of the old parts to use for a HT oven, or forge? should I keep anything??

We don't know whats in your furnace..... Is it LP,Natural Gas, Electric?
Maybe take a gander at some of the threads on forge building here and see if they require anything you might pull out of it.
Also take a look on Darren Ellis's website http://refractory.elliscustomknifeworks.com/ He has a lot of info on building a forge.

it's an old school(70's), massive, oil burning forced air.
I mean huge, it's the size of a small room.....
I'm just thinking of taking the isulation from it and the burner if it would be usable.
I'm not sure what any of it would be rated for, any idea how hot a furnace like that runs?
I'll have to find a makers mark and see if I can hunt anything down that way.

I think the average burner would be around 120K BTU.
and I don't see why it wouldn't work ? you may have to change the Nozzle
to get what you want for heat. the ele eye and the ele ignition would be nice.
you got my beanie working now. there has to be a reason why we're not hearing of these set up's..

If its OLD you might not want to mess with the lining insulation - Asbestos?

yeah I was kind of worried about that too, I'll have to get my father to come get a sample and get it tested (he can do it where he works)

You may be able to get some firebrick out of it.
