New series airing on Discovery (we get it on Wednesday nights). The spokesman is an ex-SEAL who goes around reporting on and playing with all sorts of military toys.
Pretty good stuff. I've seen segments on increased use of military robots, ground, air, and sea varieties.

Last night they visited the secret plant that manufactures the new mini-gun, with details on it's operation, and a live-fire test against vehicles out in the desert.
Also an exceedingly deadly anti-armor munition that, like a cluster-bomb, deploys dozens of laser-guided anti-armor bomblets that turn several acres into a killing zone.

Worth a look.

I catch that show every now and then. I liked the one that showed the MetalStorm system. 1 million rounds a minute, and the only moving part is the bullet. Or, even better, the 40mm cannon that fired 10,000 rounds a minute. Craziness.

I just hope they never have a segment on Skynet:eek:

the 40mm cannon that fired 10,000 rounds a minute.

Any more details on this? Caseless ammunition? Or is it the MetalStorm concept where all the ammunition is loaded in the barrel already?

I caught a bit of that show. Host was talking about the Barrett .50 cal. Turned it off when the host held up a .308 round and said "This is a .308 round which is chambered in the AK-47." WTF over? Last I checked the AK-47 chambered the 7.62x39. I would of thought if the guy is a Navy Seal he should of known that. That or he was not paying attention reading the script.

Is that the show where they showed an old Pre-Nuclear British submarine and tried to talk it up as the pinnacle of stealthy submarine technology?

The secret location where they make the minigun and the range where they test fired it are all part of Dillon's Ranch/holdings. The Dillion that makes the reloading machine I have at my right elbow.

He made some improvments to the minigun design and started to manufacture them at some point.

Halfneck...are you sure he wasn't showing you an Ak74? I am sure many could correct me on this here if necessary, but I think the Ak74 fired the 5.45 soviet round (I think that is the calibre). Many of these were converted to shoot the 5.56 nato round which is also known as a 223 or 308.

Um ... you are a bit confused.... .223 and .308 are not the same round.
.223 = 5.56mm NATO
.308 ~= 7.62mm NATO (the specs are actually slightly different. There is considerable debate about how significant that difference is. Anyway, it is very different from .223.)

the show is ok, but some of the stuff they show isn't that revolutionary and the guy on the show is a moron.

I think its 5.65 for the ak47
7.62 for the ak74
5.56 for the m16 family

AK47's are 7.62X39 .308 is similar, but not exactly the same.

AK74 is 5.45x39

.223 is the pretty much the same as 5.56X45 NATO

the AK47 is 7.62X39 and the .308 is 7.62X51, they arent even really close ballistically (the .308 is considerably more powerfull) nor visually (other than they both are 7.62MM they look quite differnt)

the AK74 shoots 5.45X39 which isnt similar to anything really, it would be ablout .20 calibre, good round though, i like my '74.

i have heard 5.56 and 223 can be different, but its some kinda funky deal with certain ammo, they pretty much are the same IIRC.

and like i said the AK47 shoots 7.62X39 (usually some are 5.56MM but the classic AK47 is 762X39MM, why anyone would want a 5.56MM AK eludes me, but thats another story lol)

nor visually

No, but when I worked at Dick's there was a crazy old guy I worked with who would take the 7.62x39 wolf ammo remove the soft point bullets and use them in .308 brass when reloading. Said it was much cheaper than buying 7.62 bullets themselves. I could see how people could get 7.62x39, 7.62x51, and 7.62x54 confused without looking at them. Ehhh he also loaded pellets into .223 brass and shot his AR in his basement. Weird guy, but knew some interesting things.

isnt the ak74 more accurate cause it has the compensator

imho the comp doesnt help or hinder accuracy, just makes it louder, accuracy in AK's varies some from rifle to rifle so its hard to say though, my most accurate AK is a early pre ban maahdi 7.62X39 FWIW, and its only a little more accurate than the '74 i have. it has the slant comp vs the big expansion chamber comp on the '74, have heard the comp on the '74 really helps with full auto, but as mine isnt full auto i dont know how much it helps, if any, looks cool though lol.

I tried watching that show, but failed. It'd be a lot more interesting without that guy overdramatizing everything.
