Alright, I went back five pages in this forum looking for a thread on Fuzz sticks, and didn’t see one. I thought there was one, but heck, I’m getting older. My memory isn’t what it used to be. And my computer/technology skills are sub-par at best.

I did find the thread on “try sticks” so that’ll give me something else to work on, but for now, I’m curious to see your Fuzz sticks.

I usually do mine with my Swiss Army Knife as I find that bigger (read: Thicker) knives don’t do them as well. On my last outing I used my 5.1 to make some to get a little fire going down at my camp. My intent was to see how the 5.1 performed. I wasn’t expecting that much in the finer cutting dept. Well, to say the least, I am once again impressed. Guy clearly understands knives. I was shocked at the 5.1’s performance. I’m no expert, but I was able to achieve this:

It is easily the best performing camp knife I have ever used.
I’d like to say Thanks again to the SURVIVE! team, you did an Awesome job!

Let’s see your SURVIVE! Fuzz sticks.

I need this thread in my life! I might wait to jump into the action until something new spec happens for me. Can't wait!

Those tiny tiny sticks have me intrigued. Gonna have to try that!

All of you guys do some fine work! My fuzz sticking abilities need a lot of improvement.
This is the only photo I have of one I did with the old 4.1.

This is Awesome! You guys are really bringing your "A" game! I am impressed.

These are for Guy. The other day, he told me about some matches he saw done up in fuzz sticks. I'm not gonna lie, with that soft wood, I probably went through 20 matches before I got it down. It really pushed the limit of my skills to do those with the 5.1 Maybe I should be giving this a shot with my 3.5

Played around with some of my favorites for a while today. Broke this down with the 5.1 first.

Smith and Sons Comanche. I was just getting warmed up, no fault of the knife.

Battle Horse Smoky Mountain Razor. I love the handle on this guy, it's pretty much perfect for this kind of thing.

Fiddleback production Bushfinger. I could've sworn I'd already thinned the edge on this thing but apparently not. It took a minute to get going.

T.M. Hunt Yuma. My grail do it all knife. I love this thing.

Fall Creek Bushcrafter. Prettiest knife I own. It's the second one I've had and this was the first time using one. I was too scared to scuff em up. Its function seems every bit as good as its form.

Osprey Apache Hunter. Probably the biggest and most pleasant surprise of any knife I've ever gotten. I assumed that since they were priced less than Fiddlebacks they wouldn't be as finely fitted and finished. Not the case.

Becker BK16. Beckers hang in with the best of them as far as I'm concerned. I do think I might add some liners like I did with the Bushfinger, it could use a bit more width but it's still probably my most used knife.

The ESEE Laser Strike is one of my other favorites with the TKC after market scales but it's on loan at the moment. I did another stick with a ScrapYard TRASH-1 but apparently I didn't hit the right button because I can't find the pic. It did well but I will never, ever understand why they have that square choil.

Now, the reason for messing with all these other favorites was to compare my new 5.1 2nd in 3V. Bear in mind this is the first time I'd used it.

I'm sure everyone isn't happy with the new scales but for my hand they're friggin brilliant. I'd been bearing down on knife handles for a couple hours at this point and they were very comfortable as can be.

I still hate choils but after getting used to the Laser Strike and now using the 5.1 I hate them a bit less. I just can't reconcile the mantra that they let you choke up for fine work with the thought that a well designed handle and little wasted space on the ricasso does the same thing without having to bear down on bare metal. Of course, this isn't an S!K issue, just something else to make me excited for some of their other offerings. Plenty of skilled people use and love their choils.

It was great to have some time to reconnect with some old favorites and try out some fantastic new knives. I'm excited for all of the upcoming S!K releases and I'm very happy with the 5.1, I can't wait to put it to more work.

On a side note, I'm more pumped than ever for the 4.5. As great as the 5.1 did the 4.5 looks like it's built exactly for this kind of work. Can't wait!

That is some fine work. I'm working on pulling my draw length back but I can't keep consistent curls beyond about 4". It was half that six months ago though so there's progress at least.

Wow, man. This sums up my feelings and quite possibly the entire choil vs no choil debate. Well said!

I have to admit, as worthy as your posts are I never felt like I had a good sense of who this grogimus character really is, but d@mn, nephew! Great feather sticks and what an outstanding collection of quality knives you own. You're the real deal!

Choils. Man, what a funny thing they are. If I hadn't seen so many very smart people defend them I'd write them off entirely.

As far as me, I'm a dabbler at best. I've made some really half assed knives and I've made some really good leather sheaths for some great knives. I decide to post at about 4am after I've drank way too much from time to time and I'm sure that's very annoying. It's embarrassing for me at the least but I don't stress it too much.

It's also recently come to my attention that I'm ridiculously horrible at accepting a compliment, I thank you for it. I love having these wonderful knives to compare.

This was the last full on detailed sheath I did. It was for a Recluse a guy I respect much sent to me. The 5.1 is going to get a similar lefty sheath treatment at some point.

My BG ASH-1 and Ratmandu are also gone atm. The RMD gets much love which I don't disagree with but it is very flat in the handle, ESEE like. I like the BG ASH-1 but I think the SYKCO version will be much more useful. Other than that dang square choil...

Thank you! I've seen many great blades posted by you.

Thanks bud. I need some more in-use pictures like those you've posted. I really appreciate the effort in posts like that. Same with those chiral puts together. If I can get it done this year (if I've got someone to snap pics) I'd like to do a few threads on field dressing and caping. I hunt alone a lot, so it is not always easily done.

You know, I think the only reason Scrap Yard put that square choil on was to distinguish some of the older res-c models from the swamprats. The swampies have round choils, otherwise a 711 would look almost identical to the camp tramp. As much as I love that blade, I don't believe I've ever used that square choil.

It's been a good while since I've posted or even been on due to stale threads and no time or funding for new knives, but first look out of curiosity and there's a fresh featherstick thread. I'll hop on the train tomorrow. Got some beauties I'd love to share.

I honestly think I know if I'll like a knife or not way before I cut something. It's all in the handle.
