Sorry to hear about the back surgery. Hope all is going well and this will only be a short setback.

I tend to like a drop point blade 3 - 4" in length for most things. The curve in the front of the blade keeps it from digging in when skinning or using the blade upside down. But a sheepsfoot/Wharncliffe style blade is hard to beat for general utility use. Especially if the point is fairly sharp and there is a very slight belly to the blade.

I really like the tanto shape for a work or utility knife. The secondary point is very useful for controlled penetration. The tip is much stronger than the usual clip blade. It is like a sheepsfoot with a point for penetration.
I like a 5" or longer spear point or a blade with the point the same height as the spine for a fixed blade belt knife. I want a tip that won't break under hard use but that penetrates reasonably well.I like a steel that I can sharpen myself without special gadgets, not so hard as to be brittle or hard to sharpen.I like a convex edge, they cut like there is no tomorrow and still leave enough metal to have a strong edge.
On all my knives I like handles that are easy to clean and don't slip easily by shape, checkering is hard to clean.
Got to go now.
