Marking it 'Not Admitted':
CANADIAN OFFICIALS STRICTLY ENFORCE CUSTOMS, ADDRESSING REQUIREMENTS FOR INBOUND INTERNATIONAL MAIL

WASHINGTON, DC -- The U.S. Postal Service is alerting customers mailing items to Canada they must comply with strict Canadian Customs and postal administration addressing requirements.

All postal items (except postcards) that do not display the complete name and address of both the sender and the recipient -- in roman letters (A, B, C) and Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) -- are being denied entry into Canada. Sender or recipient identification such as "Grandma" or "Aunt Ruth" are not acceptable and are among the causes of mail being returned.

According to Canadian officials, this action is pursuant to the Canada Customs Act and reflects heightened security measures.

Accordingly, addresses to recipients in Canada should be printed in ink or typewritten in capital letters, and the last line of the address must show only the country name, written in full, and in capital letters. When a Canadian postal delivery zone number is included in the address, mailing requirements allow that number to appear as the last line of the address.

Customers also are reminded that complete and legible customs declarations -- along with required import documentation -- must be provided to specifically identify the contents of any package. General descriptions such as "gift" or "present" are not acceptable.

Canadian Customs offices report a backlog of incoming postal items containing incomplete or inaccurate information. According to Canadian officials, these items eventually will be returned to their points of origin for correction by the sender as soon as practical.

I GUESS ALL CAPS MAKES THINGS MORE LEGIBLE... :D :D

I've got most of the stuff that Yangdu and Bill have sent in the past 3 weeks, so it must be coming into effect for the near future.

I sent a knife to Canada a week or so before Christmas and my P.O. clerk was very vigilant about my address label and customs form. But it did arrive safely at its destination in about three weeks.

I sent two packages to Canada and am still waiting for them to arrive. That was a week and a half ago or more.

Mine take between 2 weeks and a month to come in usually... It's a long wait, but in the end, it's always worth it.

Fastest it's come is in a week.

nice to know that we aren't the only ones with this kind of stuff going on.

If you can no longer designate something as a gift then what should it be designated as if it is a gift?

Not only do the regs not make sense they are hard to understand, for me, as usual. :barf:

Mine was designated as a "Gerber Tool." It bothered me to have the contents displayed plainly on the outside where any sticky-fingered person could see it and decide if it's something they might "need."

So you have to specify the object then? I'm with you Raggie, that really sucks!!!!
Not that I've ever mailed anything to Canada but I might someday.

I figure you can still declare it as a gift but you'd still have to say what it was.

Gift

Well I guess that's where my JKM is.
I ordered it on Dec. 4/04.
I figured it was lost or stolen.
Uncle Bill is nice enough to be sending me out a new one with my 12" AK I just ordered.
I had ordered A Sarge Knife on Dec.2/04 and it arrived in less than 2 weeks, It came right to my mail box and I don't think it even went through Customs?

Well if Canadian Customs is that back logged I can only imagine what it is like at Immigration today, it is Inauguration Day.

Are all the people who promised to leave still coming? ;) :barf:

I sent two packages to Canada on the 4th and 5th of January and neither has arrived yet.

However, there is now a off-white van parked outside my drive, with a Radar dish and a man in a trench coat watching the house with binocs....boy, do they get pissed when the forms aren't filled out right!!

Nah, they're Greenpeace guys who want to arrest you for cutting down trees. Crimes against treeanity.

Welcome to Canada! As for having to write what is in the package on the package, that only aplies to packages from out of the country. Within Canada, you can mail a handgun in a box, with no lock, as long as you DO NOT write what it is on the box. So far I have only one knife sent from the states, the one Raghorn sent. It got here just fine, but a little slow. (Thanks again man!) I have a Spyderco on the way, I just hope they dont sieze it. I get most of my knives sent to a friend in Michigan, and then go and pick them up.
