I was in San Jose, CA. last weekend (20141011). Picked up 2 stones from the kitchen supply store in Grand Century Mall - corner of McLaughlin Ave & Story Rd. I've been looking for a cheap thick AlO stone for sharpening & filing w/o having grit falling off like sand in low concrete. Yes, a cheapy substitute for Norton India stone, which I can freely use like sand paper consumable.
The smaller stone was painted to look like SiC but after a quick AlO to AlO stone rub, I can see all sort of garbage inclusion embedded in the surface. Worse off this stone is so soft, to an extend that I can flick some grit off by my thumb nail :thumbdn:
The larger stone is clean and hard. Estimated the fine side be around 400 grit. Quite pleasant to use with result on-par with Norton Premium SiC stone, except it uses water instead of oil for SiC.
FWIW - YMMV
