I added what I believe to be correct Nepali 'titles' (in Devanagari script) to the khukuris and other things, on:

Very interesting! My daughter will love it. She has been trying to find the Devanagari alphabet to start learning Nepales the hard way instead of just the English style. By the way, on pronouncing the words like at the bottom of your signature block are they spelled phonetically and pronounced as such ? She's learning to read a lot with her penpal but was wondering on the pronunciation.

actually, I think Nepali (and Hindi, etc.) are easier to learn in the devanagari alphabet because the Roman alphabet we use for English doesn't work well for Nepali unless one uses special diacritics and accent marks. Because there are different 't'-sounds and 'r'-sounds for instance. The Royal Kami's nickname 'Bura' (Old Man), the r' is actually made with the tongue curled back. With the tongue against the teeth for the 'r', 'bura' actually means 'bad, evil'. :eek:

Forgot to reply to your other question - the quote in my signature block is actually in Vedic Sanskrit. It's phonetic, but English isn't ;) But it would be pronounced more or less like it looks, but the 'E' vowels sound sort of like English 'ay' (rhyming with 'day').

A nice Nepali learning book is the 'Teach Yourself Nepali' by Michael Hutt & Abhi Subedi - and they have a package of it with an audio cassette too.

I'm not sure what you mean about is there a way to translate stuff on the computer. I don't know of any automatic English->Nepali translator, but there are ways of converting Nepali written in Roman letters (i.e. 'English' letters) into devanagari.
