Hey STR, first off sorry about your back and the cat (how you guys doing btw?).

second, what colors do you have availible in G-10? could you post a pic of them if at all possible?

i am wanting to send my Lahar in for new scales (as i have talked to you about, though it was awhile ago lol).

i remember that you said something around $65 to $85 for the scales.

also, do you do alum. scales? and in what colors and for how much?

thanks STR, gotta love the budget "pimping" of a knife :D

Ok sorry for the delay. I don't think I want to try to grab up all my G10 300 paces from the house out in the shop to get them in here to snap some scans on my flat bed scanner but I'll gladly describe the colors I have currently for you.

Dodo Blue, Black and Red, Black and Tan, Teal green, plain black, and hunter orange is what I have in the way of smooth G10. I also have a small amount of lime green translucent G11.

In textured G10 I have ranger green and coyote brown with texturing similar to what Strider uses on their knives and some black G10 with texture similar to what you see on most Spyderco and Emerson knives.

In Micarta I have in linen, red, black, green, and brown, and in canvas I have green, black, brown, and finally some paper micarta in a yellow ivory color. I may have a small amount of burgundy linen also.

sounds like you have alot of options availible. whats the price difference between the micarta and g-10?

I really haven't broken it down like that in the last few years. The reason being that in some respects working the Micarta is harder to do than the G10 especially when recessing holes in the stuff because of the linen or canvas fabric which tends to grab and fray at times and also if its not secured down on the work table it can ruin a piece in one second flat so even though its less money it makes up for it there. Also, I am surprised at how easy it is to break band saw blades when cutting micarta. I've broke three blades this past year and each time it was cutting micarta. It must have something to do with the heat generated. I really can't explain it but I'd bet of all the blades I've broken in the last ten years most have been when cutting that stuff.

so in general the micarta can be more costly than g-10, just because of the recessing of holes and its likeing to destroy band saw blades.

well that makes sense.

can you tell me, hopefully, what the average price for a knife with a 5in handle or so in both g-10 and micarta would be, just from past projects that have been similar? that way i will have a ball park figure for what i will need when i send you my Lahar.

STR, quick question: what's the difference between G10 and G11? and would it be possible to get a pic of the translucent G11? I know you're not taking any more work for a little while, but I have something that might need new scales when you have some breathing room.

About the best I can do is show you this link here. As for the difference. Well, G11 to my knowledge is more 'industrial' and for utiltiy uses and only comes in the one translucent color. Again I stress this is to my knowledge. Its all I've ever seen it in and it is that jade green translucent like color that is very hard to capture with my camera. It also supposedly has a higher glass fill % than G10 and as a result is said to be stronger or just as strong in a thinner stock or something of that nature. It may also have a higher thermal rating. What I've bought is always the same thickness and that is .118 for whatever its worth. That is not quite 1/8" in case it confuses you.
