G-10 Dragonfly, any timetable or release date?

I've seen them in the 09 supplemental and pre-orders online (some less than $80). But wondered when they would get to market? Anyone hear anything?

They just released the Pretentious. And it looks as though the strategy is to stagger new knife releases as opposed to getting them to market as soon as possible. Maybe Christmas?

If suppliers are short in providing stock, they would delay release. There could be a back log of quality parts needed to complete assembly. Let's all take a deep breath and wait to hear. Active Verb, I'd like to hear more about where I can pre-order for less than $80. I haven't been able to find anything near that.

I dont know about less then $80, but YourCornerStore has a pre order for $80.98. That is the cheapest I have found

It's still a little rich for my blood even with the VG-10 and G-10 scales for that small a knife given the alternatives. I'm going to wait and see how the market fairs on these. FWIW I think the Dragonfly is going to be more popular than the G-10 Poliwog even though the latter is more stout but also overpriced at $115 for a small blade. I may go Byrd or buy used.

In another thread someone mentioned that the FRN version would be discontinued upon release of the G-10 version. Does anyone know how accurate that is?

I thought it was being disco'd for the G-10 version, but they could be keeping it or updating the FRN design.

I could be wrong, but unless sales are poor, I can't really see Spyderco dropping the FRN Dragonfly. It fills a niche as the only lightweight, inexpensive, Spyderco branded folder between the Ladybug and Delica in size.

It's highly unlikely Spyderco would discontinue the FRN Dragonfly. I believe the plan is to release an updated FRN version, after they evaluate the response to the G-10.

The G10 Dragonfly piqued my interest quite a bit, but I appear to be in the same boat as many others, in thinking it's just too expensive for what it seems to be. I suppose I can't help but think of the 75mm Persian I bought for around $95 when I think of the $80+ Dfly. The Persian has Micarta and Stainless steel bolsters, which seems hard to make, and it has a larger VG10 blade. And it is a collaboration model, so some amount of money must also go to the designer.

For around $90 I could also get a Benchmade Stryker, which is larger, has G10 slabs as well, and a D2 blade (tanto or spear point), and titanium liners. It's also assisted opening, but I don't know if that particularly adds to the price. I don't intend to compare apples and oranges there, I know they're different knives, but, green apples and red apples perhaps?

Accidental double post, not quite sure how! I can't figure out how to delete this post...

I believe Sal mentioned that the FRN will continue alongside the G10 for a while until the FRN get's it's own redesign.

is overpriced. the amount of material in the knifeblade is a small amount of the total cost of production of a knife. Obviously the cost of the raw materials (VG-10 vs. AUS8) ... G-10 vs. Zytel matters. then there are the intangibles, the things you don't see or think about that make it worth it. No blade play, knife razor sharp out of the box, stellar customer service. Price vs. value. There's the ticket. $80 is more than fair for a G-10 Dragonfly and $115 is more than fair for a ball lock Poliwog. Agreed it's a small knife. "But darn well worth it!" :)

I didn't mean to say that those knives at those prices are "overpriced" generically, just that it's over my budget. I'm looking lower end but still trying to get quality. Sorry for the confusion.

I was very excited about this knife. I recently bought my first Spyderco and it would have been a dragonfly had it not been for the molded clip. When I noticed the new Dragonfly I was super excited, it was almost like they made the knife just for me.

Now that prices are coming out, and my interest in Spyderco is growing, I am really starting to have second thoughts. I to am comparing the price to other knifes and having a hard time justifying getting one now. Like you pointed out there are alot of options in that price range of full size knifes. When you look at smaller knifes you can spend a little more and get something nicer like a CF Kiwi, is this one any thinner then other Kiwi, so that is where I am at right now.

Thanks. That's good to know.
