i am one of those people who really study knives for a long time (on the internet) trying to find the perfect one before making the purchase. my first decent knife was a CRKT drifter in g-10. i really like the knife and it was my only pocket edc for several months. after searching and searching for the next knife, i finally decided on the dragonfly because it has a small blade, but still has a decent size grip because of the choil. i like a small knife for ease of just having it with me and not knowing it is there. i wanted a lower riding, and more reliable clip than the molded frn version has so the g-10 version fit the bill. i picked one up off ebay from spydieguys (i recommend them) for a good price and i have had it for four days. so i will update this review if my views change.

Initial impression- g-10 is much grippier than on my drifter, this may be because my drifter is worn down a bit (this is all i have to compare to so it may not be the case). out of the box it is super sharp, ive already cut myself twice. the color is pretty nice, a little lighter than i thought. the blade is not very centered, not a big deal for me though. and there is a sliver of a gap between the backspring and one of the liners. the other side is nice and tight. also, no blade play :)

Ergonomics- a little weird at first, i think it is because my thumb is so far back compared to my index finger. i am getting used to it though. my pinky sits on the ledge where i believe it is supposed to. my hands have much more room than i thought they would. ergonomics i would say are good

Carrying- the clip is small, and not quite as tight as my drifters. but i like the look of it and it seems to be working well. i do not like how wide the knife is. i cant put it right in the corner of my pocket, and when i do go to put the knife my pocket, sometimes the thumb ramp hits the corner of my pocket and makes me use both hands to get it in and sitting just right. i am liking the tip up position though. when i put my hands in my pockets my hand meat slides nicely on the back of the knife (i really wish it was narrower though). how my knife carries is probably the most important aspect for me. i dont get to use my knives often so most of their time is spent in my pocket waiting.

Opening and closing- the opening hole is a little tough to use, the small handle and stiff opening contribute to this aswell. i couldnt flick it open untill today, and it is extremely hard to do. (unlike my drifter which flys open super easily) i do enjoy just slowly opening the knife though, not super smooth, but it really clicks into place once its open. the lockback is stiff and hard to push in, but not too bad. i can pretty easily close it one handed.

Overall- a nice, classy knife. cuts well, (although i havent gotten to test this much) with nice ergonomics. i dont like how it carries though and i find myself almost wishing i had gotten a different knife because of this (or maybe its just my addiction telling me to buy another)

if you have any questions i will gladly answer them. sorry guys, no pictures :(

Good review...

I carried an old FRN Dragonfly in AUS8 steel for a long time and it was the best EDC blade I have ever had. Sold it though as it was an SE and that was a pain to maintain. I'll definitely be getting the newer version when I can. The opening will smooth out eventually. I used mine as a keychain knife putting a keyring on the lanyard hole. This allowed me to use the weight of my keys to help me spyder drop the knife open anytime I need the knife out. I've found that small folders carry better loose in the pocket rather than clipped.

What kind of pockets is it uncomfortable with? 5 pocket jean style pockets or slash pockets?

What's the clip like? I had the previous FRN Dragonfly and found the clip unconvincing, downright flimsy.
Are the scales grippy? Can you say what the weight is at all, in grammes or ounces.
Thanks.

I really like my G-10 Dragonfly. I prefer the wire clip (not flimsy IMO) to the standard Spyderco clip on this particular model. Rides well on a jean pocket, the design is well suited to tip up carry. The updated FRN version due out next year will also have the wire clip.

just regular 5 pocket jeans. it is not "uncomfortable" it just doesnt go over to the very corner of the pocket because the wide blade hits the seam. causeing me to clip the knife about one inch from the side. i am getting used to it though.

the scales are very grippy and the pocket clip is proving to be very secure. it is very small though. sorry willgoy, i do not have the weight but im sure you could easily find it. it never has struck me as "heavy"

It weighs 2 ounces on my scale (with the clip). The stainless back spacer adds to the weight. The liners are skeletonized. It's a very sturdy small knife. Zero vertical or horizontal blade play, dead solid lock up. It's nigh impossible to flick open without loosening up the pivot significantly, but I prefer a strong detent in a tip up carry.

quick update*

the knife seems to be broken in and now i can usually flick it open and spydie drop it.
the width of the knife is not bothering me as much now, but the pocket clip isnt quite as good as i had thought. when i flick the knife open my ring finger puts lateral pressure on the clip, this moves the clip (about 1 or 2mm) so one side isnt quite touching the handle scale. i can just push it back, but i dont like the fact that the clip can move side to side. it is also a little loose for my liking, a couple times now i have looked down to see the knife starting to come out of my pocket. this only happens if it catches on something though. and i cant deny, i love how the wire clip looks
this knife feels very nice in the hand and i love how much control you have when using the finger choil.
thats all for now. thanks for reading
