Gentlemen:

I'm looking to hand work some G-10 scales. I've read some info but would like to hear from the experts. What is the best method/medium to round off black G-10 scales, (due to the glass content) ?

Any and all information is very much appreciated

Wear a dust mask and work in a well ventilated area. Rough work it with a file and finish it with sand paper. Or, if you have a router and a bearing guided round over bit you can do it that way. Wear a face shield if you do use router.

Sandpaper- Wet or Dry?

Thanks L6:

Should I use wet or dry paper? I've heard the wet medium keeps the dust down. Any suggestions on # paper to use- Its not a large job.
:)

RAYE:
Wet will keep the dust down. You could also try using a little bit of 3 in 1 oil or some other oil on the sandpaper. When using the file, it might help a little bit to put a little bit of chalk on the file so the file doesn't clog up with the G-10 and stop cutting. If you ever move up to using a belt sander or something to shape the G-10, make sure you don't profile too quickly (I accidentally made that mistake last week). The friction heat will build up and cause your G-10 to burn and it smells terrible, and make sure you wear an actual respirator if you use power equipment on it.
Sometimes after sanding, black G-10 will look a little bit white or lighter colored. Don't worry. Rub some oil (WD-40, Tri-Flow, 3-in-1) on it and clean the oil off and the color is normal again.

Thanx gents

Chang, L6:

Guys, thank you for the help and information. :D

Project starts tomorrow ;)

What are you making, anyway? Making new handles for a folder or something?

Chang:

No nothing special. Just a little touch up ;)

I'm doing a lot of reading and hopefully will jump into making my own blades soon.

Thanks again for the info ! :)

For light touch ups, just sand under slow running tap water. There's no worry of dust and it's easy to clean up.
