Would G-10 be too out of place on a custom trad folder?? Does anyone have any examples?? I really like the feel and grippyness of G-10.. How long does the color last?? Pretty much indef I would gues..

Case makes some models from G10: CASEXX

Having said that, I don't like micarta, G10, synthetic 'stuff' on my traditionals....it just doesn't look right IMHO.

Therein lies my dilemma.. I dont think it would nesc look right either.. Thats why I was trying to dig up some pictures.. That red G-10 doesnt look terrible however.. Id like to fondle one though..

I think it would be kind of cool. I dont know why but I just love G10. To be honest I hate old and new celluloid scales on traditional folders but its traditional on some.

Ya mean like this:
Ken Coats Shadow Traper

The color can last indefinitely, though I suppose it could appear to fade if you left it in direct outdoor sunlight all day, every day for a couple of months. G10 is an epoxy. Epoxies degrade in UV light such as is in sunlight. the degradation is only on the very surface of the epoxy, so even if it looked a bit chalky, it would still be plenty strong.

Yes very similar.. How do you think it would hold up long term compared to bone or stag??

If you drop bone or stag on a hard surface it can crack or chip. G-10 is much less likely to crack or chip if you drop it. Bone or stag will last a lifetime if you don't damage it. Just understand that it can be damaged fairly easily. I've dropped and destroyed a few bone handles in my day.

Advice taken.. Thanks..

Micarta and carbon fiber have already been used by some of the best makers out there. I can't see any reason why g-10 wouldn't a good choice as well.

I agree with Knife Outlet.

I'm getting a trad folder built and I want something that I can use hard for years and still be able to pass it on to the kids.. I'm just pondering the idea of going with something other than stag, bone, or stone.. Id absolutely love to go with fossilized dinosaur bone or mammoth ivory/tusk, but I'm just worried Ill drop it and it'll be all over..

G10 would work for me , since mine are all users. Micarta works as well , which is evident by my EDC that Ken Erickson made , with jigged brown micarta...

now , that looks traditional yet will take years of abuse with no worry of cracking from temperature changes , oils , solvents , being dropped , etc

To me that is drop-dead gorgeous. Love the blade shape and size. Does Ken have a name or designation for that design?

This one Keith Johnson made me out of the G-10 I have been giving away in the knifemaker supply sales area. I just got a Barlow from Raymond Smith that he jigged the same G-10, will try to get pictures up later.

I've always thought a "tactical" traditional folder would be interesting. A G10 handle with a tanto 1/2 serrated black coated blade of some sort in a sllipjoint.

The main strength of a tanto is supposed to be its stabbing ability. Stabbing with a slipjoint is not a good idea.

I agree, but how may people really stab anything with their high speed-low drag tactical folders anyways??
