I have a brand new/unused Spyderco G-10 Police model. I am not really a knife collector but several people who presuambly know more about these things than I do tell me that I should not use this knife as it is some sort of collectors item. Can any of you Spyderco afficianados give me the straight scoop? Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is that it is now discontinued. Other than that, I can't think of anything else.

The only thing that I can think of that would make them say that, is the fact that it was recently discontinued.

Thanks for the quick and informative replies. I really like the knife's design and want to use it, but if it were a prime piece, I would make alternative arrangements.

Said almost exactly the same thing, at exactly the same time!
LOL

i use mine as my EDC, it's awesome, you can get hair shaving sharpness pretty easily

handles really nicely, feels great in the hand, and looks gorgeous... what more can you ask for?

I carry my G-10 Police almost every day, and it still looks great. However, if they are discontinued I may start carrying my SS model. I alternate between it and the Wegner.

 I thought Spyderco was going to introduce a G-10 Police with VG-10 steel. Did they already do this?

RattlerXX,

Unfortunately, the G-10 Police was discontinued with this years release of new designs. I lament this, as I own two and think that they are the Cat's Pyjama's, in knife terms.

Nimrod, I recall Sal mentioning that a very small number of G-10 Police were inadvertently made with the hollow ground blade instead of the flat grind blade. I believe it is this hollow ground bladed G-10 Police that some people feel are collectable.

The otherwise flat grind G-10 Police are only "collectable" in that they are now discontinued. I hope this helps.

I have one of those rare hollow ground G-10 Police knives, and it is spectacular. Although it may be considered "collectable" I carry and use it routinely. It's a very nice design indeed.

I just traded for a G-10 Police and it has the hollow ground blade of ATS-55. There is a date on the box of 5/21/02. That would indicate it was made recently? I thought they switched to the flat grind quite some time ago. I also thought they added a metal liner to the clip side for the clip screws. (this one has no liner) Any replies would be appreciated. BTW, I plan on carrying and using it whether it's rare or not.

It seems to me that there are a quite a number of these hollow ground G-10 Police models floating around. I suspect that there are more of them in circulation than we might otherwise suspect.

I sure hope that the majority of the hollow ground G-10 Police went to forum guys. Non-forum guys may not be aware of the differences and may not fully appreciate what they got.

Each blade style has its advantages--the flat grind blade is probably a better slicer while the hollow ground blade (with its thicker spine) is probably a better penetrator and chopper.

Personally, I don't think the run should have been described as an error--it should have been made a standard blade option. :D

Toothed,

I couldn't agree more. The hollow ground G-10 police is a great knife, and after all the S/S Police model still uses the hollow ground blade so they would always have some "around", right?

Jeff/1911.

Its a good knife. Put it to use. If that is not an option, I will also vote for the purchase of the ss model for hard use and put the g-10 one away for special occasions.

Be aware that the box you have might not be the original box that the knife came with, from the factory, unless it came directly from Spyderco.
