Sal -- or whomever -- just wanted to mention that I just recently traded another knife for a Kershaw Avalanche. The Avalance's handle is by far the easiest to grip of any handle/material I've ever come across.

I've posted a time or two about my dry hands. It is one of the reasons I am so leary of SS handles. I love the handle on my Calypso Jr Ltwt. That is the best FRN handle I've used by far. For awhile, I thought that "new" Native Ltwts had the same grip pattern. Was disappointed to learn that was incorrect.

Anyhow, my question/request is to ask you to check out the texture of the Avalanche G-10, and to consider using a similar texture on one or more G-10-handled Spydercos in the future. I know I'd be on the buyer list, and think maybe others concerned about a good grip might be as well.

Thank you for your consideration.

What G-10 knives from Spyderco have you handled? I think the grip on my Gunting's G-10 scales is better than on the avalanche.

TOTC -- Guess maybe only my Wegner, now that I think of it. May have some vague recollection of another, but can't dredge it up to the surface. I also think somewhat vaguely I saw a picture of another Spydie with G-10 that looked almost polished.

Are you saying that the Gunting's G-10 is more textured than the Avalanche? Damn! Of all the Spydercos that I have no interest in, the Gunting tops the list. Don't tell me that I now have to make a liar out of myself too?

Looks like I over-generalized twice maybe.

I don't have an avalanche right here to compare to my Gunting but I can tell you that they are very comprable in their "grippiness." I haven't handled a wegner so I can't say how that would compare. Different spydies have the g-10 roughed up to different levels. The tempereance jr. looks like it will have pretty smooth g-10 but I won't know until I get mine :)

BTW - more goes into the grippiness of the knife than just the handle texture. My Gunting surely has more grip security than an avalanche just due to the shape. Also check out the Lum Tanto in g-10. That thing has great texture with good ergonomics also.

Hey Bugs, you can wet sand G-10 to make it look almost like carbon fiber. I sanded the slabs on a CQC-7 awhile back...looked pretty nice but I ended up bead blasting them to texture them again, they were just too slippery.

Hi Bugs. "Grip" is always an issue in design. The "right" grip for the "right" model is always a challenge. Many say the Capypso jr has "too much" texture. Many like smooth micarta. "It is a puzzlement".

Finding the "right" grip for the largest segment of ELUs is always the top goal. At Spyderco, we try to keep a few models around that are more for the aficianado (like the Military, Gunting, etc). That's where many of the forumites fit into.

The first model of the Temperance jr is a fairly smooth G10. Grip is created in the pattern. Because of the pattern, it is very unlikely to slip either forward or backwards by accident. The down side is that it is really not an attractive piece.

I'm sure that we will continue to experiment with texture as time moves on. We have a new texture in the works for some of the up-grades of the current models.
