Does anyone have any experience with the $100 or so "India Import" swords carried by G. Gedney Godwin http://www.gggodwin.com? I'm looking for an honest-to-goodness, functional sword, but I can't afford a whole lot of money ($150 tops, INCLUDING shipping, tax, etc.). I rather like the looks of the 18th century "infantry hanger" or "hunting"-type swords (especially the British pattern 1751), though I'm not so sure of the practicality of an all-metal grip. I also like the U.S. pattern 1860 naval cutlass. The Cold Steel 1917 naval cutlass comes in last for looks, IMO, but I HAVE seen it in my price range in a couple of places. I prefer shorter blades, hence my preference for cutlasses and hangers over cavalry sabers (I also prefer single-edged weapons, for that matter). I don't buy gaudy, non-functional "wall-hanger" swords, any more than I buy non-functional "decorator" guns. I like my decorations to be fully functional.

I'm afraid I can't help you with those swords in particular. I can say however that in general one does in fact get what they pay for. If you are buying a 100 dollar sword that is what you will get. You may get less than a 100 dollar sword but it's extremely unlikely that you will get a 150 dollar sword or even a 110 dollar sword. My advice: save the money until you can afford a sword that you are proud to own. I wish I had way back when I bought my first stainless ninja sword.

As far as G. Gedney Godwin goes they are very nice folks that have excellent customer service. If you absolutely must buy a cheap sword they are a great place to get it.

I did send an inquiry to Godwins. They replied that while the cheaper swords aren't as nicely finished as the Windlass swords, they are fully functional and they "aren't complete garbage", and they will warrant their product as far as my full money back if I'm not satisfied. So I may possibly go that route.
