G-Rex handles look terrific, however I could never come to the comfort with them. I can only talk ASH-1, as I do not have other G-Rexed knives...
Anyway, Ash is the most comfortable knife I have/had and I especially like non-magnum handles. This sure could explain my discomfort with the G-Rex as they are a bit thicker. Not a big deal at all, but after few hours of the knife usage I feel the difference. So I decided to take a closer look at the geometry of the G-Rex handles and this is what I noticed (I am sure many of you guys know this already). The G-Rex handles are thinner at the back and thicker up front with the mid handle being the thinnest part. The middle peak would not even touch the straight line going from peak to peak from back to top peaks. Please see the picture of the original knife from the forumite I got the knife from. I draw the lines and you can see that they are not parallel and are narrower at the back. If you look carefully you will notice that the lines do not touch the middle peak.
I decided to change the geometry a bit. What I wanted to have is three exact same thicknesses at 1" on all the three peaks.
Here is the picture of what I wanted:
After a bit of filing/sanding/polishing this is the result. As you can see the caliper touches all three peaks on both sides of the handle. The handle thickness at the peaks is the same and meets target goal for all practical reasons.
Now it is very comfy for me
As an added benefit the pattern of the grey/black lines is symmetrical on both sides (not how it used to be) now:
All in all this one great knife and the one I will use the most out of my Busse family now.
I realize that G-Rex handles issue I had might not be true for many, however decided to share this as I thought that still someone may benefit from this post.
Thanks.
