This is blade made from HighSpeed steel, they do not tell which exactely, but promice to find it out. When I look at the blade I found it is laminated - as I understand this is standard for all japanese blades so they did not even mention it on the website. I assume the core is High Speed.

And of course it has traditional japanese grind - convex grind and convex edge. Blade is pretty thick 6mm or 15/64". For some reason not too while ago everybody think that traditional japanese gring is single bevel, somebody even build their marketing compain based on this misconsept.

Blade is 6 1/2" long. It has wooden sheath. Handle is made of same wood and quite comfortable.

Thanks, Vassili.

oh yeah, I like that one!

Very nice tanto you imported, Vassili. I love the contrat between the textured flats and polished grinds. I'm glad you mentioned they were convex because they look hollow in the photo's. Nice scabbard and handle. Speaking of the handle...

The only thing I'm not sure I like is the leather band around the handle with the snap. Does that interfere with a high grip?

Great knife and great photo's as always! Thanks for sharing.

It nailed to handle with wo small nail - so I take it off. I'll probably keep it to hold knife in the sheath, but take it of to use. Handle under this leather ring flat and need to be growed same way as remaining handle.

There are some legal restriction on tantoes in Japan - I am not sure that this one is actually tanto - I saw some tanto in antique shop in Yokohama and it is different.

Tanto is samurai knife, not regular knife so there are some restrictions, but I don't know details. Friend of mine sad that if I send him for heat treatment blade out of ZDP blant he send me - it can not be tanto shape because it is illegal in Japan.

Thanks, Vassili.

OK, I made three grooves on the handle near guard - on the part which was under that leather ring. It looks much better now, and I keep this leather ring as a fancy locking system for sheath! I'll make more pictures later.

Thanks, Vassili.

P.S. to modify handle I use SpecBump, just because it was closest knife to me at that point - it make job done.

Here it is (sorry - had no time to make pictures right):

In result handle is exteremely comfortable. It actually tiner in the middle in both dimentions, grooves are just right - it is almost pleasure to play with it - swing, change grip ets...

And I use ring to keep it in sheath.

Thanks, Vassili.

This is a very impressive knife, especially for the price. Also, its unusual in many ways, in particular the use of stainless steel. From your specifications, it sounds very similar to a powder metallurgy D2 steel but with more chromium it should be a true stainless steel. Seems to a steel with excellent knife potential. Thanks for showing the pictures. Jason.
