id like to sand down a knife i have with G10 scales and would like to know the best way to do that.....does it wad up like some plastics or can you bench it down pretty smooth?

If you sand it with a machine wear a respirator. A mask is not adequate. You need lung protection with this stuff. Its glass fibers can cut you on the inside so don't make a habit of breathing the dust of G10 ever.

By hand on a small area you can get by with nothing but even then I think most would suggest at the least you wear a mask. Many reports of scratchy throats have come up from sanding it even by hand so just be aware it is a health thing when sanding this material.

It sands and machines quite well though which is why its so preferred over other materials. Also it is quite strong and most of the newer stuff is sold as G10 but its technically FR4 which is very flame and heat resistant almost to the point that it is immune to it.

G10 sands very well, almost like wood (except harder). You can work it down with progressively finer grits until it is very smooth. But you should keep things a bit wet and maybe wear some sort of mask, because the dust is very, very bad for you.

I sand/ polish almost all of the knives I buy in G10, and I've never managed to mess it up. Be safe and have fun!

(edit) Aaargh. STR beat me to the punch.

WEAR A RESPIRATOR!!!!!!!
Beyond the glass that is bad enough, I wear a OV FM cart because of the fumes from burining epoxies of various construstions. If you are hand sanding you may be fine with just a respirator.

Yes its a dead horse but this guy is new and if he hasnt figured out the search function I thank God someone told him to wear a respirator. Safety info can always be repeated. On the gun range we rehash it for people all the time.

True Jim. I guess we can let it slide. Do wear a respirator, and you will be fine.

Okay I think I get the respirator part...............(you mean an air feed respirator as opposed to a really good filter mask right?)

But what about dust collection and air filtration and eye protection. I read somewhere that you don't have to worry as much about the particles you can see as the ones you can't!

I just got some G10 scales for a KnifeKits build I have and, I admit it, I am a bit leery about doing anything with them.

Enlighten me............. or maybe I'll just go with Coco Bolo that I have on hand and can handle easily.

Thanks for asking this question btw.

It would not require an air supplied respirator. One of the rubber masks with HEPA filters whould be adequate. You could ware a half face with goggles or you could wear a full face.

Yeah a normal respirator is fine. The dust is bad for you but an amount so small you cant see will not harm you. Wear the respirator while you clean up and you will be fine. If you sand it on a grinder belt you will have abucket of water unfder it to catch dust and keep your work cool. If you hand sand just make shure you do it in an easy to sweep area and not in the corner over a rug. Woods arent much different. Wear a particulate respirator especially for stabalized wood. Dust is bad for your lungs so no matter what handle material you use protect your lungs.
