G10 Dragonfly vs Urban - Which one and why?

The Spyderco g10 Dragonfly and the G10 urban are very close in the specs. NOT the exact same, but close. One has a lockback and the other has a slipjoint.

Why, for reasons other than legal/political, would one choose the slipjoint over the lockback?

I do like them both, and the urban seem to be selling well in places where they are not legally required to be non-lockers.

Why?

There has to be some reason for it AND I WANNA KNOW!:D

I like the wharnie blade on the Urban. That may be a factor. Another factor is the option of orange G10.

Some people also like the simplicity of a slippie.

If I had to chose I would pick the Urban for the same reasons he just mentioned. I have a lot of high end knives, customs, mid-techs etc but the the orange g10 UK Pen Knife is one of myy favorites of all of them. It's a incredible slicer, has great S30V heat treated just right, good ergos,it's light, I like orange g10 and it's simple. Plus in 99.9% of cutting situations I don't need a lock.

Dragonfly for me. I've got the original FRN PE and new G10 PE versions. I prefer the added security of the locking blade. The only non-locking folders I have are SAKs and I've even got several locking SAKs (Wengers) for the same reason - I don't like non-locking folders.

How do you like the G10 Dragonfly? Thinking about ordering a few for myself and family for Christmas gifts.

Been waiting forever for this one!

I should add that I meant the green g10 Urban that is almost the same as the Dfly. The orange Wharncliffes do look mighty tempting though as well as that rescue Slippit. If they had a lock they wouldn't be tempting they would be SOLD!

I have a FRN Dradonfly with the AUS8 steel and love it but it has been replaced by my FG Urban. The Urban leaf shape blade is close to a slightly larger Dragonfly. The Slipit works so simply and I have never has a problem with it but you have to respect the fact that it does not lock. It does make it simple to close. The Urban has become my EDC.

Hey sizzler, the G10 Dragonfly hasn't left my pocket since I got it on Oct 20th. I've been waiting forever for this one too!
I love the original FRN but this is in a totally different class. It's heavier because of the full steel liners but I like the extra weight. It's small enough that it isn't a hindrance and IMO just makes it feel like a more robust tool. The original's integrated FRN pocket clip is a joke compared to the wire clip on this one. Whereas I always carry the FRN one in pocket for fear of the clip not keeping securely in pocket, the wire clip holds the G10 version very securely.
I was originally considering the Leafstorm as a higher-end small EDC but I am leery of the handle design, especially how to position your forefinger without it sliding up on the the base of the blade. The G10 D'fly's jimping in the finger choil and on the base of the spine is great and my fingers fit quite securely.

In short, all I can say is get at least one to check it out for yourself. I'm sure your family members will be asking for their own when they too fall in love with it! I'll likely buy another as a backup for myself too.
Don't know if you've seen these in other posts but here are a few quick pics I took:

I'd never go for a slippie if there is a similar locking variant.

I didn't much fancy the original Dragonfly FRN, horrible flimsy clip and just generally cheap and ineffective feel.I gave it away.

Changed my mind after seeing Natural Mystic's excellent photos of the G-10 version! Didn't know it had steel liners either, and that clip looks properly tight and reliable.I feel a knife lust coming on......

@ willgoy - thanks man, glad you like them. It really is a solid little knife. Absolutely no blade-play, which would have been a deal breaker and big disappointment for me.

That realy seem to be a good little lockback. I seldom lust for this type of knifes as im no colektor and im 100% pleased with my gray Calypso jr. But a knife locking like that might come handy!!! For me a knife of the modern spyderco style has to have a lock to be interesting. And for locks I only like lockbacks. I dont like folders to big. I like bladesshapes that is flatground and not to thick.
This could be the new spyderco for this desenium for me.

Here are some more pics taken a few days ago. I've been playing around with my new Canon G11 under different lighting conditions, hence the variations in color of the G10. The first pics above were shot under natural lighting and these were shot under incandescent lighting. The G10 color in these is closer to how it actually looks, although the image is a bit darker overall.

I have 2 Urbans and an FRN D'fly and they are both nice but the Urban sees way, way more use that the D'fly.
I find the Urban much nicer to use as well as more comfortable and IMO it looks better too.....but that new G-10 D'fly does look real nice too.

The price on the G10 fly is a dealbreaker for me. I'd rather have an etched Cricket.

Actually, I'd rather HAVE a G10 fly, but I'd rather BUY an etched cricket :D

Spyderco is putting out a new version of the FRN Dragonfly in the ilk of the G10 version. Wire pocket clip, jimped, new handle texture, etc. They had a post about it in their forums, no idea if they decided on the pivot, liners or pin vs screw construction yet. So if you're wanting the G10 DFly but can't pony up that much dough, the new FRN version may be the answer :)

As far as the Dragonfly vs the Urban... Tough call. But honestly if you're allowed to carry a locking knife, might as well. It's an extra bit of safety to protect yourself. If it saves your fingers even once, it's been worthwhile, right? That being said, I'm kinda tossed up between the G10 Dragonfly, UKPK, or waiting for the new FRN Dragon :o

Edit: And very nice pictures Natural :)

Thank you sir! Yeah I heard about/read the thread about the new FRN version that's supposed to be coming out. I also made the recommendation to do an H1 steel version.
I'll probably get one of each if they were to release both.
Where I live I think that even something like my regular EDC blades - Delica4 or MiniGrip seem a bit big so this is a perfect fit for my environment. I keep the Delica4 or MiniGrip, or sometimes my RAT Izula in my EDC bag as a back-up blade.

For the price point, why don't you consider a UKPK? It's a slip-it like the Urban but offers better steel (CPM S30V) and has a nice 3-inch, leaf-shaped blade. It also fits the hand like a glove. A superb EDC, in my opinion.

Agreed, the UKPK is a really nice knife too but like the Urban it's non-locking which is the only reason I personally wouldn't buy it. Again, for some people, locking or non-locking blades are not dealbreakers if they like the overall design of the knife. The UKPK is a non-locking version of the Caly3 right? I'd like to get a Caly3 sometime in the not too distant future.
