I'm im the market for a new Benchmade and I was curious about the 580-2. I already own the 581 and was wondering if the scales of the 580-2 have the same slick texture as the G10 on the 581. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is this the same shade of grey as the Griptilian 551-1?

I just got my 580BK-2 in last night. Same shade of Gray as the 551-1. The G10 is textured but I wouldn't call it aggressive at all. Kinda on the smooth side but enough grip to provide decent purchase or hold. Not sure how else to describe it. I also have the 581, they are different, the 580-2 has more textured G10 but I wouldn't say there's that much difference as far as grip. I regard them both as decent enough to get a good hold of, but neither offers a super or aggressive grip.

Not sure if I answered your question but hope this helps.

All the best!

A bit of a hijack here. Yes, the G10 finish is rather smooth, not like a VZ Grips G10.

I have a bit of a different question. I have been using a BM580 with Valox for the last 2 years and it really *SNAPS* when I release the blade. If it hits something by accident when it is opening, I just move it a bit and it snaps the rest of the way.

My new 580BK-2 is really wimpy and if something gets in the way and I move it, the blade kinda sticks. It's like it has a much weaker spring. I sent it back to BM and it came back exactly the same way. So did BM weaken the spring on the new model, or do I need to send it in again?

How do you like the knife now, a year and some time on?

I met up with Benchmade at the SHOT show and all of their new Barrage models have weak springs. I'm trying to like it but I don't know if I will ever buy a Benchmade again. While their warranty is second to none, their design seems to have gone downhill.

That's unfortunate, I'm thinking the assist in mine is doomed. From what I understand, a few of the assisted models are much better as manual folders, like the Barrage and the discontinued APB.

I just purchased 585-2. Very nice G-10, spring is strong like in BM 2551. Handle shape is tappered.
