I just received a G10 Kershaw Leek via UPS today. I was really excited to get home and get it out of the box.

Well, I'm kinda disapointed due to these things:

1. The knife blade is touching the liner when closed due to the blade being so off center.

2. The liner lock just barely engages. I mean barely.

I know that Kershaw Warranty is great so I'm going to send it to them and hope that I get it back perfect.

Liner locks often barely engage, some times inertial openings or spine whacks can address this issue.

Cliff,

Do you mean that doing inertial openings and/or spine whacks can fix it or make it better?

I'm almost pissed that I bought another liner lock.

I wonder if there is a way for me to center the blade without having to send it in? I don't even need it centered I just don't want it touching the liner.

However at the same time I bought a 556 Mini-Griptilian so it's in my pocket now and it's making me happy :D

Before you send it back, you might try a quick fix yourself. Loosen the pivot screw about a half turn, hold the blade well away from the side that it's hitting, and re-tighten the pivot screw. If it's not too outta whack, that should fix it. If not, call Kershaw.

As for the lock, many liner and frame locks will "wear in" quickly. Since it's an AO, you shouldn't need to fling it open as Cliff suggests; but try opening it normally a few dozen times, and see if it doesn't seat deeper on the tang. Again, if it doesn't then call Kershaw.

Gryffin,

Thanks bro. Just tried out your suggestions and nothing worked.

I appreciate the effort though! ;)

I got mine today and the blade is not centered. I'll try that trick. It is not so bad as to rub the liner. Not as sharp as my Rainbow Leek out of the box but my main reason for purchasing this knife was to compare time between sharpening. My Rainbow is an EDC and has been flawless. I'll post more after a few weeks workout.

If mine wasn't touching I wouldn't even care. Mine was touching so bad that when you open and close the knife you can hear the blade rubbing against the steel liner and it's not a nice sound. Not good when your knife sounds like scissors.

Maybe it's an "autosharpen" feature :D

Joe,

Sorry for the issues your having with the S30V Leek you purchased.

I got an email from our Warranty dept - I asked Dawn (Warranty Supervisor)to get the knife back from you - I would like to see it for myself.

We will make sure you get it back with eveything the way it should be.

Thanks for your patience.

Craig Green,
Kershaw Knives.

Craig,

Thanks for stopping in. I'm used to seeing Thomas Welk. :D Good to have you regardless.

Yep, Dawn sent me an email. You guys have always been great with taking care of me. Just recently I got 2 replacement clips for one of my Kershaw's and I only asked for one.

It's really not that big of a deal and I'm not upset at all about it because I know sometimes things slip out of the factory. We're all human.

I'm going to ship it out to the address supplied from Dawn and I'll be shipping it to her attention.

Thanks Craig for popping in. :)

I also wanted to add that when I get the Leek back I plan to do a full review on it in an entirely different thread.

It is a sweet knife and it will be even better with the issues fixed. :)

Here are some pics of the current one before I ship it out.

The bottom pic is a perfect example of a poorly fitted liner-lock. There is no way I would trust my fingers to that particular example, in the photos.

I just received mine today and have the same problem with the lock. It barely engages.

I emailed Thomas, and after reading this, I'll try and get it sent to Dawn as well.

Once the lock is adjusted, I know I'll like it. Nice knife.

That's too bad. I really like the idea of the S30V Leek, but I wish they'd kept with a frame lock. What I'd like to see is retrofitting old Leeks with S30V blades with the old blade profiles. Seems like the older ones have been sharper. Of course, my dream Leek is still a framelock with the lock side flamed titanium and the other side translucent jade green G11 with a VG10 blade... oooh yeah... Hey, I can dream.

With the blade opened and the pivot backed off a half turn, press against the flat of the blade and push it TOWARDS the side where it is almost touching, not away from that side. An uncentered blade can be the result of the blade tang not being fully seated and this little trick will usually fix it right up.

Thanks for the suggestion P239. I appreciate little bits of experience like that!

Thomas with Kershaw has already been in contact with me and the knife is heading to the shop for a look-over. Excellent response!

Yep, this is the quickest and easiest way to "center" a blade. Its probably what the factories do when you send it back anyway. Most of the time you dont even have to have the knife opened. Just grab closed knife on each end and apply pressure to center the blade. Works on all types of folders too. I even centered the blade on an aluminum handled BM 520 by pushing against a wooden post. I have never found the need to loosen the pivot though.

I had an Avalanche that had a lock just like yours. Eventually the lock "broke in" and fully engaged, so I dont really see that as a problem.

Well every liner lock I've had has locked up solid in the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the tang. I mean the entire liner should at least be on the tang.

I also notice that with Benchmade the curve the tang so it gets harder and harder to move across the tang. That's a pretty good idea.

Another thumbs-up for P239's process for re-centering.

Also agree with Cliff that some intertial openings usually fix the lack of lock engagement.

I hate liner locks, but did learn a few tricks along the way :)
