G10 "knife"

"Black/Green G-10 Micarta Fiber"

There is some confusion here.... G-10 and Micarta are not the same material! G-10 is suitable for making knives that can cut -- not like steel, but they can cut. Micarta is not. I'm not sure what that knife pictured is, but it looks like Micarta....

Both materials are plastic resins reinforced with fibers, but the similarity ends there. G-10 is epoxy resin reinforced with glass fibers. Micarta is phenolic resin reinforced with somewhat varied organic fibers. Micarta is a good handle material, but it is not at all suitable for making a blade out of.

Hey Cougar!
I agree that the information the guy gives is a little messed up. Maybe he's confused in his terminology and / or definitions. (ANOTHER reason to get him over here!)

To me, the material looks like the same type G10 that Allen Elishewitz used in the Tung Pan series. (And a few others.) It was a green and black mix (with a hint of blue if I remember correctly).

Thanks guys for the material clarification. The ones pictured on my site www.geocities.com/bladewiz/bladewiz.html are made from G-10 the I purchase through Masecraft Knife Supply. They call it "G-10 Knife Grade" and have it under the heading "Micarta" so I used that nomenclature too. And glad to be now on the forum!......Bryn

Lynn: They dont have a site but their address is 254 Amity St., PO BX 423, Meriden CT 06450. Tel no. 1-800-682-5489. They carry some neat stuff for handles: G-10 in colors, stag, exotic hardwoods, CF, etc. I've been into Kydex ang G-10 knives for awhile but am currently getting into grinding "real" knives as well and am getting most handle supply from there. They usually have a large display at the NYC show....(BTY...was there last month and it was great)
