G10 Police..Good buy??

I just purchased the plainedge version of this knife...I was just wondering what anyone else thought about this knife...

My EDC is an AFCK. How do the 2 steels compare?? ATS 34/55??

The tip of the blade looks like it might be a little brittle just because it's so fine..
I love the feel of the G10 scales on this one...not too smooth like my CQC7...
 
You made a good buy. The Police is a great knife for larger cutting chores, self-defense, and just about anything you can throw at it.

ATS-55 is a proprietary steel, I think produced exclusively for Spyderco (I'm not sure. I know it was made exclusively as a knife steel, and Spyderco is the only brand I've seen with ATS-55-steeled knives) by Hitachi. ATS-34 is another knife steel that saw wider use than -55. Both are good, but I'd lean more in favor of ATS-55. From what I've heard, 55 takes a finer edge and holds it longer than 34 under similar conditions. 55 was also more expensive than 34, because it was a finer grain steel.

ATS-55 was discontinued at the source, and both of these steels were replaced, in Spyderco's case, largely by VG-10 and CPM-440V, both more expensive, more specialized steels. VG-10 can take a higher polish and a razor-sharp edge, and is good for light-duty chores. CPM-440V is larger grain and both hard and reasonably tough, usually isn't polished as finely, and takes more of a ripping edge that is suited well for hard cuts in tough materials. Both of these do better than ATS-55 in their respective jobs, and subsequent knife designs have incorporated the blade steel that fits their intended use and looks better.
 
Bok, excellent choice.

As a martial arts instructor, I chose the G10 Police as my EDC. It is light and easy to ALWAYS have with you. I am sorry to see it discontinued. I also have all three versions of the SS Police but as others have noted - the SS is twice as heavy as the G10. The SS versions are great for customizing - the G10 is great to carry.
 
i agree BOK, the Police is indeed a very good lookin knife, i've got one myself too! i pryed it from the hands of two other losers, well, one other one cuz he was too dumb to look for it. i'm sure you know what i mean when you read this :D

Thanks for the replies...I love my G10...has an amazing edge...and is super light...I have hairless arms because of it...no complaints about this knife:D
