I recently got an FBM with magnum g10 handles and I love the way it looks (blue & black g10). After chopping some random logs for a little bit, I noticed that in my sweaty hands, the handle became uncomfortably slick.

I have had a bunch of g10 folding knives (spyderco) with really grippy handles and was expecting the same from the FBM. Was I mistaken?

Does anyone know a way I can make it permanently grippier without spending a lot of money?

You could checker it in some strategic spots with a file, like a rifle stock. That may help enough.

Yes, I hit my user SHBM LE with G10 handles with a sand blaster with 320 grit media. It roughened up the surface perfectly, I then touched it up with 1000 grit paper and then I oiled it. But I would bet using fine sand paper would do the same. Some others here may have some ideas.

but do so at your own risk. I took a risk and it payed off. I will do the same to other user G10 blades.

I just bought a MrS at Knob Creek.

The black G10's on the knife have a lot of texture.

No slipping with that knife.

Gee. And I just sanded down my blue-black G10 FBM. But I'd use gloves when using it anyhoo. (Smooooooth mag G10 feels SOOO good on this badboy.)

Thanks for the replies :)
The handles certainly have textures, but they are large and deep. I think I need many smaller and shallower textures.

I am sure work gloves will work, but I was wondering if there is some material or chemical I can put on that will make it rougher. Ideally, something like a spray-on sandpaper. I have used this kind of product in the past and it would be great if it didn't wash off.

Call your local sports store and get some grip tape of some sort. They use the stuff to re-wrap handles on tennis rackets, etc. It sticks to itself great, but does not mar the handle of whatever you are wrapping it around.

The stuff is very grippy for your hands. It also has the added benefit of insulating your hand a little more from shock vibration while chopping. I used this stuff on my SHBM, the handle of which was slightly small and fairly slippery for me. It changed the knife from something that felt ok to something that now feels awesome. What's more, if you don't like it, just take it off and you're back to square one. I think a package of the stuff with 3 rolls in it (enought for 3 big knives) is ~ $5.

Powerflex tape is great. Actually a med-tape that hockey players use to wrap stick-handles.

I use it on my Glock 22 to make it grippier. Works wonders. Self-sticks, but doesn't leave residue. A bit cushy and stretchy too.

I would personally never spray any type of grip enhancer on the g10 slabs.
I reccomend what Dennis said instead.
Use martial arts or hockey tape/wrap.
My old CGFBM always dug into my hand under heavy usage. The tape is a great solution to providing a more comfortble feel and more grip..

I was afraid tape would have adhesive, which would eventually turn into a goopy mess. I'll check out the grip tapes you guys suggested.

I also find the G-10 to be slippery when wet. If I'm just doing relatively controlled chops it doesn't bother me that much but for a power stroke I feel like it could end up sailing through the underbrush! For real comfort get some moleskin wrap like for golf clubs. I don't know how long it would stand up under heavy use but it is secure and provides a tactile grip.
