G10 vs. Micarta handles

Both. :foot:

Seriously this has been discussed dozens if not hundreds of times. Micarta is the winner in most guys opinions but in mine there's not really that much of a difference. I own both and I will continue to buy and use both.

I prefer micarta because it grips better than G-10 when wet :D or bloody .

The general consensus is that micarta is warmer in the hand with a softer but grippier texture. G10 is better for those looking for complete non-absoption of fluids and moisture. It's nice to have a good grip when your knife is bloody, but it's also nice to know your handle isn't soaking up the blood.

G10 can also take up a sand paper grit (sanding it with 80 grit sand paper makes it feel like your holding a handle wraped in 200 grit sand paper), where micarta just gets fuzzy. I prefer g10 because of that, and because I hate seeing the scales darken up with sweat, oil and blood knowing it's being soaked up into the material.

I've always loved micarta. It just feels right...
But now, I just got me a NMSFNO with magnum G10's. The scales on that INFI are awesome! I didn't even know G10 could feel so good.

Cheers!

I am a big believer in both with each having there application. G-10 when it's wet, icy or blood. Canvas Micarta in blood(blood gets tacky) or other apps. I find G-10 to be better when wet and most noticable when icy. Ice/freezing condition will cause canvas to smooth over due to the water adhering to the canvas. Just my .02. Now if I was back down south, I might say Canvas Micarta for everything:)

Micarta for bigger knives, and g-10 for smaller knives. Every chopper I own has micarta handles. Much more comfortable in the hand while chopping.

I prefer Micarta on all fronts. I like the look of it after use, and the feel of it is much better in my humble opinion.

It also depends on the knife I suppose. I like G-10 on smaller blades, like for instance the MUK.

Smooth G10 > Machined G10 > Canvas or Linen Micarta > Paper Micarta

I prefer micarta because it grips better than G-10 when wet :D or bloody .

And it grips better by a wide margin. It is also much lighter, and feels MUCH better in hand. G-10 feels like a cold rock.
Also, any thing the micarta soaks up will wash right out and look like new, so no problem there at all.

If you want pretty, G-10 is the way to go as its color's are much more vivid, and it can be made in any clolor you can think of.
G-10 is tougher, but micarta is plenty tough for very hard use, so no problem there either.

It all depends on your application. while many hard use knives use micarta, G-10 is more hard use. I've heard it's chemical resistance is way better (solvents, Gasoline, Oil) as for grippyness, g-10 can be given all kinds of textures. I'm not an expert, so don't take my word. just things i've read. i'd guess, if you can get to a knife shop, try holding both, see wich one you like!

Are we differentiating between paper micarta and canvas micarta?... my G10 seems gripper than my paper. The paper feels so smooth, almost slick, while the G10 feels like grimy skin. I've yet to hold canvas micarta, though I don't think I ever would order one for myself simply because I don't like the looks much.

G10 on some knives. Canvas Micarta on others.

I really like the Linen micarta too (My SarQ!)

I really like the G10 on my Muck. I just hit the corners with some 600 grit just to take the edges off, and they are like butta!

The paper micarta (in response to the above question) is a completely different animal. Sure feels great in the hand, but much smoother than either.

What he said. An as others said I love the micarta for the warm feel.
