Anyone know which of these handle materials is more porous?Or which one is more likely to retain fluids? Also refresh my memorie as to what exactly is G10

Depends on which type of Micarta you're talking about. Paper Micarta is as smooth as my g/f's derrière while linen Micarta (like the stuff Busse uses) can be very rough and porous - definitely more porous than G-10 (which is a glass fiber matrix filled with epoxy).

I don't know how porous G10 is, but when I oil a knife blade, it seems to soak into the G10 a little bit as well. G10 is incredibly durable, but I personally prefer the feel of linen and canvas micarta; it just seems grippier. I might be crazy, but when micarta does get wet, it almost seems to get a tacky feel to it and grip almost seems better. Why? I don't know. Maybe it's just me. G10, if I'm correct, is used to make the base for computer boards. Ahhhh, what the hell do I know.

Okay, to test this, I just placed a drop of water on the handle my TSEK (G10). After about a minute, I wiped it off. There was a dark spot on the G10 where the water was. This tells me that it is at least slightly porous. Oh yeah, and my bass boat is aluminum, so so the comparison doesn't work for me ;) .

G10 is fibreglass and about as porous as a bass boat.

Fiberglass boats are slightly porous. Not enough to cause any leaks but enough to damage the Fiberglass epoxy laminate. The paint on a fiberglass boat actually protects the fiberglass/epoxy laminate from water damage. Most bass boats aren't in the water long enough for any damage to occur where the paint is scratched or chipped but it is a problem on boats that are in water for long periods of time.

Actually, Busse uses canvas micarta it;s even tougher than linen micarta.

all micarta is paper-based polymer. it's got a "warmer" more cuddly feel to the hand. textured g10 has similar grippiness to canvas micarta. g10 is tough enough to pound all kinds of stuff with (including some metals), don't try that with micarta of any sort. hey, just some FYI from a fool who's used the handle of a knife to pound something, lol.
