Hi all,

What do you think of G10 material used for knives blades?
Is it plastic or fiberglass (how to work with it... like metal?)?
Can it cut as much as a steel blade?
Do you know where to buy G10 material (for custom knife making)?
If you know a G10 FAQ somewhere, I'd love to read it :-)

Thanks a lot guys,
Guillaume

Blades? dont you mean handles? i have yet to see a G10 knife blade. I do however think it is one of the most durable handle materials and all my customs have it for handle material, its grippy even whwn wet, it wont crack or chip if you drop it, and it doesnt show scratches. Its great for handle material but for a blade i dunno, have never seen it.

Yes, I do speak of blades.
For instance, Fred Perrin does one model of his "griffe" fully in G10. It's light, seems to cut very well. But I want to know more about this material (if you have any link...).

I also know that AG Russel did a knife in plastic... but i don't think it was G10... maybe u know? (I'd be curious to know)

Thanks,
Guillaume

Yes they do make some "kinves" out of G-10. Its primary use is for stabing/slashing self defence style tool. It will "cut" rope if need be. It takes an edge very quickly, but dulls just as fast while cutting with it.

I think it would work well for a box cutter where you are only cutting tape.

I have done some minor cuttign with a few G-10 knives, I will stick to steel.

A few items made by Eric, from USN. From his BET lineup.

Bonjour Guillaume,

From Belgium..

I've made some stuff in G-10, it's easy to work, and defenitely not like steel... much easier. you can file it to shape and finish with a single cut file, then polish if desired.
Grinding is very easy, and the grinder will remove more material then you excpect in no time. Make sure you ALWAYS wear respiratory masks, because the dust - and it makes a LOT of that - will give you cancer in no time.
Cutting.. well.. it certainly isn't steel.. give some hard alu or copper an edge - mankind made swords out of bronze a few millenia ago - that is pretty close to the edge G-10 takes and holds. Needless to say, if you wanna cut a seatbelt, you better A. have a freshly sharpened edge or B. a serrated edge to saw.
on the positive side.. it looks cool ( polished as well as satin), and it's very lightweight plus people love the talk about metal dectectors and stuff like that if you wanna sell it :D

If you need more info, gimme a mail :D

Greetz and take care, bart.
