So what exactly is this G10 stuff? I don't mean its chemical makeup or anything like that, but how strong is it really? I've seen the scales on the Police and Civy in G10 and they only have a steel liner on the side with the clip. Is the steel liner for added strength or simply so the clip could be screwed in? The Chinook seems to have steel liners on both sides. If it's only for the clip, why does the Chinook have two? (I'm not entirely sure the Chinook has two as I don't own one YET).

Thanks
Ian

G-10 is a glass fiber and epoxy laminate. If you look really close at a cross section of it, such as the thinest portion of a handle slab, you can see the layers. The basic principle behind making it is as follows. Much like Micarta (usually a natural fiber i.e. linen, in Micarta's production), glass fiber and epoxy are alternatly layered and cured under extremem heat and pressure. Several tons worth. The finished product is very hard and impervious to most chemicals. As far as the actual toughness goes, I took the very thin handle slabs off of my BM AFCK after I broke an inch off of the point. Austin Nichol's Wild Turkey 101 helped me do this.... But anyhow, I flexed that thin slab like crazy and it didn't want to break to say the least. More of a controlled flex, much like one of Ed Fowler's knived in a vise, if that makes sense. Hope this helps, I sure I missed some important point. Thanks :D

G10 is the same stuff they print circuit boards on. only thicker, and dyed prettier..

As mentioned, G10 is tough, impervious to chemicals and temperatures, provides good traction. The Chinook has 2 liners to achieve the MBC required lock strength.

Spyderco's G10 layup is custom made with more layers than normal G10.

anyone carry a military model for defense, i am ordering the serrated blade, any cutting/durability tests ??

Thanks for the input!
Picked up my Civy today and the more I play with it the more I'm impressed with the G10. Seems like darn good stuff, just wish the Civy had dual liners, though I really don't see as that would make it much stronger than it already is.

G-10 is one of my favorite handle materials, and though I also like other companies' G-10, IMO Spyderco's is the nicest version. I like the way Spyderco's G-10 texture offers grip but is not "overdone" and it just looks great.

In addition to all of the other valid qualities of G-10 as mentioned here, I have personally see a 1/4" thickness of G-10 laminate stop .22, .25, .380 and certain 9mm para. ammunition from pistols. My knid of handle material!
