If you are in the Atlanta area, please feel free to come by the new shop on Friday evening for a social gathering of the GA Custom Knifemakers Guild. Then on Saturday morning around 9 we will have classes and demo's until around 2pm. The social and meeting are open to the public. We will still be in the process of setting up, but we should be functional by then. The more the merrier.

Congrats on the new shop coming together Andy! Man, I wish I could come by to that demo and meeting.

Have fun!

Wish I lived closer to GA.

The new shop is really starting to look good, judging by the pictures I've seen. It must be an exciting step to take!

For some reason I thought I knew the address of the new shop. Not sure if I can make it Saturday but would love to shoot up for a bit. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

2590 Business Dr. Cumming, Ga

The shop is all the way in the back.

This weekend my wife & I had the pleasure of attending the GA Custom Knifemakers Guild Meeting that was held at the New Fiddleback Shop. After completing the big move, Andy & Crew welcomed members & friends of the Guild at a social gathering on Friday evening. It was a great opportunity to get a personal tour of the new shop and to enjoy some pizza and a few cold ones with the crew & fellow Blade Forum members.

Here are a few shots of the new grinding & handle shaping room complete with 4 new KMG's and a Grizzly Vacuum System:

Early Saturday morning with members of the Guild setting up their display tables. Here is Dennis Bradley of Bradley Knives, as well as, Andy's daughter with her in-line skates:

A significant aspect of the Guild's charter is to foster the development of young craftsmen. Here is a shot of James Mitchell introducing one of his promising new students from the knife making program he sponsors at Columbus High School. Mr. Mitchell also took the time to read several letters from parents of his students that expressed their gratitude for the impact the Guild Members have had on their overall development. Quite impressive !

Here are three recent graduates of Mr Mitchell's program. Allen Surls, in his role as Vice president posed some thought provoking questions to these young men that enabled them to express their individual experiences. What was most impressive is that all three plan to continue developing their skills as they make the transition into college. Based on the level of their accomplishments they were inducted into the Guild as honorary members:

One of the highlights of the meeting were the live demos that were conducted. Here are shots of Ken sharing a table saw safety demo:

What I found most fascinating were his use of customized sleds & jigs to cut out standardized handle scale sets and liners in a safe & efficient manner. Ken is certainly a zen master around the table saw:

Another fun event was the "Iron-in-the-Hat" raffle. This is where Guild members donate various knife making materials to help raise money for the Guild. Tickets are 6 for $5.00. As your number is called you get to approach the table and select a prize. As you can see, Andy generously donated five 12" machete blanks from a new batch that just arrived. Needless to say they went quickly:

Here are a few familiar faces. Jarrett Fleming together with Allen Surls:

Here is Andy & David checking out Jarrett's latest batch of knives. From the look on Andy's face I'd say he was diggin that Trailmaster with the bolstered mammoth scales which I believe was a first for Jarrett:

Here is Andy along with his youngest daughter checking out the wares on Dennis Bradley's table. In case you aren't aware, Dennis makes some awesome drop point & clip point hunters at his shop in Blairslville, GA:

Another highlight of the meeting was the raffle drawing that was done in support of a scholarship program that the Guild supports. Here is a shot of the winner holding a collaboration knife, that was crafted by several fellow Guild members:

Finally, no meeting is complete without a hearty lunch of awesome Georgia BBQ, complete with baked beans & coleslaw. The meal was topped off with some delicious home made banana pudding made by Andy's wife. Here is a shot of Andy's family serving up lunch along with an extra helping of genuine southern hospitality:

I would like to personally thank Andy for extending the invitation to attend this special meeting of the Guild, and for the hospitality that was offed by everyone in attendance. Georgia is blessed with some serious knife making talent, and some kind hearted individuals who deserve to be acknowledged for paying it forward through the efforts of the Guild.

That looks like such a great time! Congrats on the new shop and kudos to everyone that mentors and passes along their knowledge. What a great opportunity for those high school kids. Thanks for sharing!

Peter,
Glad you posted up some great pics. It was good to meet you Saturday. I was glad my son and I were able to find a little time to come to the meeting. Very talented young men that shared their experience was certainly good to hear.

Thanks for sharing,
Preston

Great job on the photos Peter. Your narrative really helps us understand what goes on at the Guild meeting. It is nice to hear about the young up & coming knife makers. This country needs to train more kids in the various production trades so that we maintain a strong base of skilled craftsmen.

Thanks again for sharing the story.

Peter the pics and descriptions were awesome. Looks like it was a great meeting. Can not wait to get to Georgia and see the new shop!

Thanks for the pictures. Just a quick plug for the Trackrock Hammer In that the GA Guild does. I went in the Spring and it was a blast. Fall is scheduled for 25-27 September, so keep an eye out for the details. Lots of folks talking knives and answering questions. I drove about 8 hours to get there, and it was definitely worth it. Lots of places to camp in a tent, and there are some very reasonably priced cabins if you call early.

Here's the details from Carl:

Some serious knife making bad-assery in that meeting. Some of my favorite makers down there in the peach state.

It was a great time for sure. Sorry I'm late getting back to the thread. I was going to post more pics, but being as it is a clean new shop it isn't exactly a target rich environment yet... So basically I got duplicates of Peter's shots, in some cases Peter's shots in the process :D

I did see some future Fiddlebacks in the grinding room :)

My first Fiddleback opened at the new shop. Digging the custom shop HB a lot!

My first knife photo taken at the new shop, outside in the north forty, since this shop actually has a yard and woods at hand! :)

That's pretty cool Brian......a shot of a shot. Your new Bocote handled production HB has a classic look to it......nice choice !
No additional comments on the Bushboot......it just takes my breath away.

Looks like you guys had fun - sure wish I could have been there - see you at Trackrock next month.

I am glad that Peter and Brian were able to make it, and to post some great pictures of the event. The Guild is definitely doing some good work in paying forward to the next generation of knife makers. And Andy seems to be doing his share to ensure this practice continues to thrive. Thank you all for sharing.
