Cool experiment doc. Fatwood and Yucca are both awesome materials, but I've never used both together like that, and have never tried a fatwood hearth fearing the pitch would just heat up and gum things up. Usually with Yucca I just tie two sticks of Yucca together for a hearth. My experiences with really rich fatwood has been that is doesn't really like to flame from embers from a bow drill or char cloth, but tends to ember itself and makes a good hot coal extender. I've had the same experience using Yucca shavings. Doesn't like to flame from the ember (maybe I needed more shavings on both counts) but it will definitely ember hot and make a heck of a coal extender/expander in a tinder nest.
