A few makers (S&W, Meyerco) make knives with a "glass breaker" tool incorporated. Does anyone find these to be effective or necessary ? Would it be a good thing for a investigative type that is occasionally called out on raids (meaning, this person won't have a sam browne, likely just a sidearm & radio) ?

Most paramedics and firemen I know (several) consider glass breakers essential for quickly and safely gaining entrance to vehicles with occpants.

Anyone can smash a window. It is another thing to do so safely with an occupant inches away.

Glass breakers are pretty important tools as said before, you do not want glass flying into an occupied vehicle. If you want in super fast use a baton, if you want in safely use a punch.

The funny thing about punches is that if you buy one from an LEO supplier, you pay an arm and a leg. If you buy the same exact tool from your local hardware store, they are pretty cheap. I used an automatic center punch made by General Tools. The very same tool I now use to mark drill holes.

I personaly would steer clear of a combination knife and breaker. Sure you have to carry one more thing but it beats having a knife in your hand. Sheople can be really wierd when they see stuff like that. And it could cause headaches later on down the road.

I agree with R.W. I carry a spring loaded automatic center punch in my gear bag and a tungsten carbide tipped scribe (about the size of a ballpoint) in my shirt pocket. Either works on side glass, obviously, neither works on a windshields. The problem with the combos is the bulk and the junk blade steel they usually have.

Glass breaker, punch.....I thought I was supposed to use my Glock for that type of work.

Funny thing with a vehicles side windows. They can be pretty hard. I have witnessed a Fireman fail at breaking a car's window. He used an extraction tool held with two hands. The tool is basically a large steel pole. It took several attempts and the broken glass was a concern.

Back when I was doing the security officer thing one night I needed to break out a side vehicle window. I whopped it hard several times with my three "D" cell maglite. It just bounced off. I ended up having to use the bumper jack from the patrol vehicle. SMASH! Glass everywhere. I wish I had one of those things. I think I saw some in the Galls catalog for less than $10. Has anyone used one of those hammers with the seat belt cutter, glass breaker and stuff?

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

I agree with R.W.& Richard.

Get an automatic center punch from a hardware store, and carry it.
Usually all it takes is one or two cycles of the punch,on the bottom cornerof the window, and the window is SAFELYbroken out, without injuring the occupants, yourself, and bystanders.

Remember:SAFETY FIRST!!!!!
