Hi Guys,

I've built the world's largest sword museum ( 403+ pieces in total ), all free and all online. Of interest to you guys probably more than the swords are the knives though, of which there are 33 so far.

Because modern knives are not my strength, I'd be happy to take serious suggestions about modern knives that are worth adding - for instance I've put a Nazi Dagger in there because they are so iconic. Beyond Nazi daggers though I don't really know much about modern knives. I know Spyderco are well loved, but if I were to pick one which one? Also I know Ka Bar are a big deal too but not sure which one to choose. (Would consider putting more than one of a brand if there is substantial reason to do so).

To make the grade I need a link with decent pictures and measurements so if you have a suggestion please include those as well, I provide all sources when listing an item.

Look forward to hearing from you guys!

Kind Regards,

Bill Blake

Spyderco Worker - Their first folding knife, which IIRC was the first pocket clip and spyderhole knife. Finding a real original is the challenge.

Wow. Clicked on the link and got some "Download Ready/OK" message.

I'll pass.Maybe you can give us a list of the knives on there.

Beyond the Nazi dagger, of course. :(

This is a good sampling of very popular and or historic modern knives:

Spyderco Sage series
Spyderco Military and Paramilitary 2
Spyderco Delica and/or Endura
Spyderco ethnic series
Benchmade ???
Kershaw Cryo
Kershaw Leek
Zero Tolerance 350 or 300 or 200
Ka-bar/Becker Knife and Tool BK9 and BK2
Ka-bar USMC fighting knife
Busse TGLB
Probably something from Swamp Rat or Scrapyard
Mora
Some type of BG-42 Sebenza
Sebenza 21--small or large
Sebenza 25
Ti-lock, Mnandi, Unumzaan
CRK one piece
Hinderer XM18
Strider SNG

I don't know anything about modern slip joints--my list stops here.

Look at the very top right corner of that advertisement, and there's a red X. Then you can look at all of the pictures.

Kabar should of course be the original USMC first, leather washers... stainless handle Spyderco Police might be the most iconic to the average non-knife person, since it seems that model pops up in TV and movies the most.

When a website asks me to download something, I leave immediately and don't come back. Like kvaughn also noted...enter at your own risk.

Two questions.

1) When you talk of "iconic," what do you mean, exactly? "Iconic" to us here? "Iconic" to the average person on the street? We just did this whole thing at length with another member who we eventually determined was looking for knives that were "iconic" to people with "more interest in knives than the average person, but less interest in knives that the average BladeForums member." I wonder which group you are going after.

2) Who is a Nazi dagger iconic to?

For better or worse, a Nazi dagger is an iconic piece of cutlery. Obviously, it was iconic to the Nazis in WWII. And it's iconic to backwards, ignorant white supremacists now. However, it's also iconic to WWII vets as a war trophy; a symbol of good conquering evil, just like a flag or a Luger can be. It's both a symbol of triumph, and a symbol of pure evil. Either way, there's no denying that it's an important piece of history.

The Thompson M1928 submachine gun was an important instrument in winning WWII. It's also the "Tommy Gun", a notorious weapon used by gangsters during the Prohibition era to enforce power over rival gangs and the police. Poor example, perhaps, since pop culture these days tends to romanticize old-timey organized crime, but the Thompson is in many ways like a Nazi dagger. It means different things to different people, but nobody can or should deny its importance, whatever it may mean.

Good point. I'll buy that.

rambos knife and crocodile dundees knife come to mind as iconic, as for a museum worthy folder i think of the sebenza with its 25 years of awesome, even a xm-18 with its vast following and impeccable greatness, and any swiss army for their long tradition of quality. a spyderco? not my first choice

Hi Guys!

Some great suggestions there and I will carefully look through them and research the suggested pieces.

I went to a different advertiser recently and I'm sorry to hear it's flagging false positives with some anti spyware programs, it's definitely not spyware but nonetheless I will pull the advertiser immediately - I had no idea it was doing any of that, as it only displays ads to some traffic types. Should be no probs on an iPad or phone now; in fact it has a special mobile version for mobile device users so it should be a dream to use now.

More suggestions still welcome, I plan to make the knives section as large as the sword section ultimately so there will be plenty of room.

Thanks for the feedback it has been immensely helpful!

I guess in answer to the question as to what makes a knife iconic, well that's where I'm hoping for some help. Because my training revolves around swords (B.A. European Lit. (Mostly Ancient Roman Course)) and their importance, I'm not as well versed in knives. I know for instance all about historic ones that are important - seax, pugio, medieval dagger and so forth, but I'm a blank page when it comes to modern knives.

Yes the Nazi Dagger is a divisive piece! I totally agree with Planterz though; I view its importance with detachment. I wasn't alive when the Nazis were out attempting to build a new social structure in Europe so I see the dagger in terms of its being memorable, a faithful reproduction of medieval holbein daggers and held in great esteem by the Nazis, and a valued trophy to the Allied Soldiers who ultimately stopped the Nazis. In the same way the Gladius defines the Romans, I think the Holbein Dagger is an embodiment of Nazism. I don't support Nazi Ideology in any way, but I must concede they had style, and the dagger is a masterpiece of design and function. The USMC Ka Bar is an icon too, but much more utlitarian than the Nazi Dagger, every bit as good but not as stylish. So in this way the Nazi Dagger kind of stands out, so I've included it, but with a disclaimer that it doesn't mean I'm backing Nazi ideology as a result. I've even got an Islamic Swords section, but I think Islam has been a motivator for some terrible injustices in history and in the modern world, nonetheless Muslims make some nice swords, and like Germans I can't lump them all in with the bad lot, that would be too simplistic and naive of me. It was a tough decision, and I thought about it alot, but in the end I decided to put pieces on the site with the detachment of a historian, otherwise I felt I would be leaving out pieces that are relevant and important.
