Anyone know of shears that will cut through the thigh and drumstick bones of chicken? I've googled poultry shears and most of them have plastic handles, which I don't think is going to hold up to the strain. There are a few brands that are all stainless construction that tend to be much more expensive, but I don't know if the leverage is enough on any of these designs to cut through the middle of the leg bones, and I'd rather not spend needlessly if the shears aren't meant to do that at all. Maybe they say game/poultry shears but they meant that as cutting through the joints or small rib and wing bones?

As to why I want to cut through the leg bones....I feed my cats home-made food where I cut the meat into chunks and grind up the bones and organs. The bones need to be cut down into smaller sections to go through the grinder. I've been using a hatchet to chop them, but it's messy because some splintering occurs (even with raw bones instead of cooked) and the bits and marrow go flying. Also, the wooden board I chop on is huge and heavy and a chore to try and clean in a small kitchen sink. I figure a strong pair of shears will save me the trouble of having to use the big heavy board and I won't get so much splatter.

I should ad that if you look at the blades closely, you'll see a half moon cut-out on one - very handy to hold a round bone while you shear through it. The handle configuration is comfortable for putting the pressure necessary. I have a pair that says "Made in France" that looks like it, but I don't know if it's the same manufacturer.

Try out the Kershaw Taskmasters.

I got a set as part of a Shun block set, and they are skookum to say the least.

Fairly inexpensive, and good to go.

I have an old pair of Case shears [commercial type , no longer made]. Proper kitchen shears should be of stainless steel ,have a notch or serrated blade to hold onto the bone , and be easily taken apart for cleaning.Other gadgets on them bottle opener etc are not needed. Don't worry about spending $ for a good one they'll last a lifetime.
