Game Warden advice needed

So I got my first game warden. I love everything about it except that the edge is so obtuse. I have tried knocking it down a little with the sharpening devices I have but without a belt grinder I am kinda pissing in the wind. I know INFI works best with a thick edge but for a little edc knife it leaves alot to be desired. My best guess is that the edge is about 35-40 degrees per side. I am not sure if this is what the shop intended or if it was supposed to be a little thinner.

I have always wanted a Krein regrind on something but I dont want to get it to thin if it isnt going to as strong.

Should I keep working away with mousepad/strop and sandpaper or send it out? Or just live with it and beat on it?

Thanks,
Zach

You have a few choices. :)

You can keep doing the sandpaper thing, but it will take awhile.

Get a good Sharpening stone, about 220 grit range Diamond Stone will work it down.

Get an Edge Pro Apex system and make sure you get the 120 grit stone, it will make short work of reprofiling it.

You can send it off to someone to do it for you, I could do it for you, but shipping and the sharpening fee would add up pretty quick.

You can contact knifenut1013 i know he has redone GWs before and his edges are insane! i dont think he charges for the sharpening but you gotta cover postage...just an option:D

I have waterstones and course DMT stones that I could do it with I am just nervous about getting it to thin more than anything. If I dramatically modify the edge does that void warranty? Would a Krein void the warranty?

I have always wanted the edge pro apex. I have seen the edges on your knives Ankerson with a very jealous eye. I have never had trouble getting a knife as sharp as I like but this little guy is a tough customer.

Ankerson do you have a good video review of your sharpening program anywhere? With your love of videos I would hope you do.

I will check out knifenut.

I believe if one takes grinding equipment to Busses it voids the warranty on the part that was altered.

Nobody wants their blades thinned out like that. ;)

Yes I have a whole series of videos on the Edge Pro. :)

That 120 grit Stone will move some metal in a real hurry I can tell you. ;)

I took my GW down to ± 20° per side using a 250/600 EZE-LAP 8" stone and I'm very happy with the performance. It took a while but it was worth it.

Any machine regrind will void the warranty on the edge, unless done by Busse. Having said that, many of us are comfortable with regrinding the edge. We are our own warranty, and trust ourselves not to do something stupid. Plus, INFI is pretty darn tough.

A DMT will be the fastest way to thin the profile, short of a belt grinder. There's nothing wrong with experimenting with a more acute edge angle. If you start to see some damage in use, then just resharpen at a slightly steeper angle, or use a microbevel to protect the edge.

You could also contact Garth Reckner at Busse, to discuss having them regrind the edge for you.

im hoping you mean 35-40 degrees inclusive, not per side. that would be 70-80 degrees inclusive. i cant imagine any knife with an edge angle that obtuse.

25-30 degrees would be the absolute thinnest i would go or risk serious edge deformation.

anyone remember nohz?

mine is in the 30-35 degree range, and was resharpened basically to the factory edge angle.

Sandpaper mousepad should not take you more than an evening to reprofile.

I have done 4 that way, including my FBMLE.

I could do it for you but with shipping/insurance both ways you're better off just sending it to Busse and getting it factory reground.

With a belt sander it would be very quick. Other methods, a lot longer. With a blade the size of a GW, you should be able to do it on a mousepad and sandpaper. I'd start around 220 grit personally, I find anything lower and the scratches are harder to remove by hand.

actually, it would be helpful to know which gw you have.

i have the oj which is .14" thick, so i can put a pretty acute angled edge on it.

if you have a fatty, you are going to have one heck of a time getting it below 50 degrees.

Well I feel encouraged to experiment. I think I will hog off some some coating and steel with the DMT and then switch to mousepad and sandpaper.

I will take a pic here tonight before I work it over.

Thanks guys,
Zach

Here is my warden. I LOVE the handle on this one. It has gotten nice and green this week. I have carried it and used it non stop this week. It cuts and whittles fine. You just have to hold it to a serious angle on the wood.

The angle is every bit of 35-40 degrees per side. 70-80 inclusive. I know it sounds crazy but it is. It gets worse towards the tip.

Just take one of your cheap knives and practice the convex once. Pretty simple really.

I have been on the Busse/Strider/Hinderer/Bark River/Ingram road for awhile. I think I only have 1 spyderco left. They are all users but not cheapies.

I have no problem learning on this one.

Nice pair.

Yes, Busse has sent out more than a few knives with obtuse, dull edges in the past. Generally much better now.
